Eclipse and New Book News

Hi guys!

Eclipse 2017 has come and gone! When I wrote about it in EVERY SOUL A STAR, 2017 seemed so far away! I hope a lot of you got to see either a partial or total eclipse–we were in the mountains of North Carolina at a radio observatory–one thing that was really surprising that is how much cooler it got when the sun went away! Felt like it dropped thirty degrees! I’ll have to check to see if I wrote about the temp changing in the book! So that really struck me, and also how totally freaked out people must have been before eclipses were predicted in advance because it was really bizarre when the darkness crept in. Here’s a little video about the event at PARI. Thank you to everyone who has reached out about reading the book and traveling to the eclipse, that means SO much to me. LOVE these pictures from school eclipse trips (and two from my own)!

In book news…it’s been a busy year, with three books out this summer–one new and two now in paperback…

SPACE TAXI: ALIENS ON EARTH: Book 6 is the last (for now) in the series for young readers grades 1-4 has hit the shelves! My husband Mike and I had a ton of fun sending 8-year-old Archie into space with his talking cat Pockets. Teachers can get an Educator’s Guide here, full of ways to use the series’ science facts in the classroom.

GRACEFUL is out in paperback!!

Book five of the Willow Falls series that started with 11 BIRTHDAYS is finally out in paperback! Come see what Amanda, Rory, Tara, Leo, David, and Grace have been up to in the quaint little town of Willow Falls, where magic is lurking behind every corner, and there are no coincidences.

THE CANDYMAKERS AND THE GREAT CHOCOLATE CHASE

All your favorite characters (and candy!) are back for more in this sequel to THE CANDYMAKERS. Come see what Logan, Miles, Daisy, and Philip are up to. Now that the Annual New Candy Contest is over, it’s time to hit the road to solve a mystery–or three!

*Coming Attractions*

Spring 2018 will bring BOB, a novel co-written with the wonderful and super-talented Rebecca Stead, hurrah!! We’ve been working on it between other projects…for seven years! That’s long enough to have a baby grow into a second grader! But the time has finally come to set BOB loose, so we’re very excited. Here’s a little peek at the plot:

It’s been five years since Livy and her family have visited Livy’s grandmother in Australia. Now that she’s back, Livy has the feeling she’s forgotten something really, really important about Gran’s house.

It turns out she’s right.

Think the thing she forgot is named Bob? MAYBE! Or maybe not….you’ll have to read it to find out. ;o) We can’t wait to see the illustrations that the brilliant Nick Gannon will come up with!

Here’s our first article about the book and the co-authoring experience.

And next summer will bring the newest addition to the TWICE UPON A TIME series…ROBIN HOOD: The One Who Looks Good in Green. It’s Robin Hood and Maid Marian in a he-said, she-said format like the rest of the series, only it’s set in outer space. Because who doesn’t love space? ;o)

As always, feel free to contact Sparta Books at 973-729-6200 if you’d like a book signed/personalized and sent to you, or as a gift for a fellow book lover.

And thank you for visiting the blog (I love reading your comments and apologize for being so bad at posting responses lately–this book-writing-thing takes a lot of time. Who knew? ;o)

I’m so glad you liked them, I promise I’ll think about writing more when I’m done with the graphic novels that I’m working on. I miss visiting Willow Falls too, I may have to reread them LOL. Hugs to you, Wendy

Hey Wendy are you coming out with a Willow Falls book?

  2. Anna D on October 3, 2017 at 12:25 am

We went up to Oregon and saw a 99% eclipse! It was amazing. I read Every Soul a Star a few years ago, but it has stuck with me. I’ve been looking forward to seeing a solar eclipse ever since reading it. I remembered the part where Ally looks at the ground and sees the crescents on the leaves, so I made sure to see those. I even at one point bought an meteorite necklace like Ally’s, and brought it to Oregon, but I forgot to wear it for the eclipse. Wah wah wah. Anyway, Every Soul a Star remains one of my top favorite books (the first book of yours I ever read!) and I credit it with my interest in total solar eclipses and lucid dreaming.
The Willow Falls series and A Mango Shaped space are way up there on the list too. 😀 A Mango Shaped Space is what really got me interested in synesthesia, and therefore realizing my passion for neuroscience(my future career). So thank you very much for that from the bottom of my heart. Your books will always be with me.

    • Wendy Mass on May 16, 2018 at 8:33 pm

It means so much to me that you brought the experiences from the book to your very own trip. And what a trip that was! I have no doubt you will succeed at all you embark on. You have a terrific spirit!

  3. Alison Clingan on October 8, 2017 at 4:18 pm

    Hello!
I just wanted to say that I’m extremely grateful for your books. As a young writer myself, I’m always really inspired by them. I read Every Soul a Star about a year and a half ago, and it actually changed who I am as a person. Now I love space and stars, all because of that book! I was very fortunate to see the solar eclipse in August, even if it was only partial! Even though I loved Every Soul a Star, I still can’t pick a favorite book by you. The Candymakers and its sequel were so good, and can anything beat the Willow Falls Series? I wish I could live in Willow Falls! So inspiring, thank you for that! I could read your books over and over and never get tired of them.
Again, I really just wanted to say thank you. You’ve impacted my life more than you know. Never stop writing!
    -Ali

    • Wendy Mass on April 1, 2023 at 12:34 pm

Aw!! Thank you so much for your lovely thoughts and sentiments!!! So cool about seeing even the partial, and you’ll get another chance in April 2024 depending on where you live (or want to travel to!). Living in Willow Falls would definitely be awesome!! I guess we get to live there for a while when we’re reading the books (or writing them ;o). I know you posted this awhile ago, but if you see it, chime back in and catch me up. Big hug to you! Wishing you clear skies always! xo, Wendy

Hi Wendy Mass! My name is Reese and I’m 11. I LOVE your books and am doing a book report on A Mango Shaped Space for English. Can you send me some tips? Also, are you going to publish another book in the Willow Falls series? I love that series. -Reese :0)

Also, your new books sound sooooooooooooooooooo good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Hannah on October 10, 2017 at 9:13 pm

I am so excited for Robin Hood! And in Space! After Pi in the Sky I know you’ll handle it well 😀 When I thought you should write more Twice Upon a Time books, I was thinking Cinderella. Haha, how small minded, I never pictured space.
Can’t lie, I was so hoping you would talk about a sequel to Jeremy Fink or Every Soul a Star, I’ll keep hoping, of course, but it will be alright.

    • Wendy Mass on May 16, 2018 at 8:31 pm

I’m excited you’re excited! Also know that authors try to never say never to sequels even if it is currently not in the plans. Happy Reading!

Hi Wendy! I am so excited for all of your new books! I absolutely loved The Candymakers And The Great Chocolate Chase! It was amazing! I got one of my friends to read Every Soul A Star a couple of years ago and it’s still her favorite book! Do you know whe Bob will be coming out yet? I’m so excited! I started reading your books when I was in third grade after reading 11 birthdays. (I am in 8th grade now) I read the rest of the series after that, and I was so excited when Graceful came out! After that I read The Candymakers, which is still my favorite book. Then I read Leap Day, which I loved. You are absolutely my favorite author ever, and I just want to say thank for all of your great books that you write. They are awesome! Love you so much! Xoxo, your biggest fan.

    • Wendy Mass on April 1, 2023 at 12:41 pm

Thanks so much!! By now you’re out of high school so that’s crazy!! I hope you found BOB when it came out and that you liked it. Funny how Graceful almost didn’t exist! Sending a hug across the miles and years…thank you for reading my books and sharing them with your friends!! xox, Wendy

Yay! I can’t wait for the new Twice Upon a Time series! Even though it’s a couple of months away… :o(
No worries, I’ll just finish reading The Candymakers’ sequel (which I have on hold from library) in the meantime.

  12. Rose on November 20, 2017 at 10:30 am

Dear Mrs. Wendy Mass, Date: 11/20/17

Hello My name is Rose, I l am a sixth grader in Maine.
I love your book A mango shaped space and used it for a project that we had to do in one of my classes. Now many more people are reading it. I really love how you showed Mia’s thoughts and how she was different from other kids but wanted to be the same.
Although, I was wondering, what made you want to write this book?
Thank you so much taking your time to read this letter.

    Sincerely yours;
    Rose Googins

    • Wendy Mass on May 16, 2018 at 8:29 pm

      Hi Rose
I came across a book called The Man Who Tasted Shapes by Dr. Richard Cytowic. I was fascinated by it and thought it would be fun to give the condition to a fictional character. Thank you for writing & for caring about Mia! xo

  13. Caroline Klayer on December 17, 2017 at 9:27 am

    Dear Wendy Mass,
I am a GINORMOUS fan of your “Candymakers” series, I love those books and have read each of them more than 35 times. They are my all time favorites! I really hope your thinking of writing a third book with LOTS of Phillip, violin ,candy, spy gadgets, Harmonicandy, mystery, and surprises. It could be about the Harmonicandy and whats happening and how it is doing, having Phillip and his dad maybe start talking more and seeing eye-to-eye would be FANTASTIC! Maybe something happening between Phillip and Daisy too(if you know what i mean 😉 ). If you can’t tell I really just like Phillip because of how funny, smart, and talented he is, I love how much he changed to for the better.
More to come from me, Caroline Klayer.

    • Wendy Mass on May 5, 2018 at 9:40 am

You are very observant to see all the good in Phillip and how his character grow over the course of the story. Thank you for your insights! xo

    Hi Wendy!!
I am a big fan, I love all your books. On the bottom of your about me page, it says that you have a YouTube channel coming soon, is that still going to happen? I think it would be super cool!!!

And merry Christmas and happy new year

    • Wendy Mass on May 10, 2018 at 7:29 pm

It’s on my to do list. I think it would be a lot of fun. Thank you for reading my books! 🙂

  15. Grace R. on January 12, 2018 at 9:29 pm

I know you’ve probably gotten a ton of responses from your book, “A Mango Shaped Space”, but here’s another. My name’s Grace, I’m 13, and i loved your book. I first read it four years ago and thought it was cool. I didn’t know why I related to it, but I had my suspicions that I had “sinestheesha”. I guess the information really didn’t sink in. Now I know that 7 is blue, E is gold, and the harmonies on Yazoos “Only You” are red and orange. In the book, Mia physically sees the colors, but I see them in my heas, much like when you think of an apple, you “see” an apple. I hope I’m not boring you, but I’ll continue on what stuff is what color. 0 is white, 1 is black, 2 doesn’t really have a color, 3 is gold, 4 is a triangle 4 and it’s green, 5 is red, and it goes on. I think it’s cool that I get to talk to an author. I don’t have a big interest in reading or writing for fun (NYS English curriculum killed it), but short books and stories interest me. Thank you for reading this 🙂 P.S. Your voice sounds green.

    • Wendy Mass on May 11, 2018 at 2:16 pm

Love that my voice sounds green! And know that short books and stories are still reading! There are many ways to love reading. Thank you for sharing your story with me! 🙂

Thank you for writing to me, I love the idea of writing letters even if we don’t send them, I feel like I write in my head a lot and then realize I never wrote things down! Not a great habit when chunks of a story goes missing, oof! Sending you a long-distance hug!

There should be a sequel to Candymakers! I loved book 1 and 2 in that series and hope to find out what happens to Miles, Philip, Logan, and what decision Daisy makes. (Daisy is my ultimate favorite!) I really enjoy your books, please think about a sequel! 🙂

    Hello,
For an American Heritage Girls badge requirement I have to send a note to an author and share my thoughts about the book. I have read a few of your books including “Rapunzel, the one with all the hair”. It was very entertaining. I liked the twist from the classic fairy tales you put on it, making it your own.

  20. Kamilav2022 on February 18, 2018 at 9:58 pm

Hi! Obviously you don’t know me, but I want to tell you what an inspiration youve been. I read your books when I was 10, starting with 11 birthdays. I’m still pretty young(14), but if someone asked me about one of my favourite authors, your name would definitely pop up. I hope you see this, and it would be great if I could get a reply. Sincerely, a very big fan!

    • Wendy Mass on March 4, 2018 at 11:25 am

Thanks so much for still reading them! I have a few teen books (leap day, and Heaven looks a lot like the mall), if you have any interest in those. Hugs to you!!

    • Wendy Mass on May 5, 2018 at 9:27 am

Oh no! Please be sure to return the book. Ask your parents to help you and I am so sorry this happened. I can imagine how frustrating that must have felt.

  25. Taririo on March 21, 2018 at 3:28 pm

I know this is a dorky way to send this, but my 6th grade student wrote you a letter, and I thought I would post it here.

    Dear Wendy Mass,
My name is Tariro. I am in 6th grade. I like drawing, dancing, singing, reading, doing craft, swimming, track and gymnastics.
The kind of books I like to read are mystery, fantasy and fiction. One of the my favourite books I read was 11 Birthdays. I really liked it because of the mystery and suspense which left me sitting at edge of my seat since I didn’t know what was going to happen next. I also enjoyed the cliffhangers the most. The most interesting thing about the book was the town they lived in was small but only Amanda and Leo were the only people who could end this spell. One question I want to ask you is when you were writing 11 Birthdays what made you think about the idea of repeating the same day? Another question I have is why did you want Amanda and Leo to have the same birthday? Also, why did you want them to get in a fight and have they try and fix the spell? I have an idea for a book you can write. It would be about a regular family like (The Hendersons) with a few flaws with their neighbors. They have a big secret that they are trying to keep away from their neighbors. As we get deeper into the story the neighbors start to realize that they are not that perfect after all. Then one day a very dangerous thing happened. The storm hits the town, but it wasn’t just a storm. A strange thing made the town travel back in time and it is up to the Henderson to take back this spell before the town knows their big secret. Also, another idea is these kids trying to find up time travel but end up destroying the world. Thank you for taking your time to read my thoughts and ideas. I love your books and hope that you come out with a new one .
    Sincerely,
    Tariro

    • Wendy Mass on April 29, 2018 at 10:19 am

This isn’t dorky at all and in fact it is much appreciated! Please tell Tariro that he has great interests and to keep them up and thank him for his ideas and the love for my books means a lot to me. 🙂

  26. Rachel on March 27, 2018 at 10:23 pm

Hi Wendy…I recently read 11 birthdays with many pages missing. I love all of your books and just want you to know about this small error. Thank you so much. Please make a movie about the willow falls series……email me when you do…. I would love to play a part.

    • Wendy Mass on April 24, 2018 at 8:45 pm

Yikes, 11 pages missing? Well you are very smart to have figured out the story. Be sure to let your bookseller know. Thank you for wanting to play a part in my books. I wish they all could be made into movies and I could pick the actors. Thank you again!

  27. Syeira on April 2, 2018 at 10:07 pm

Can u look into making 11 Birthdays a movie? That would be AWESOME!!! Love you!

That would be so fun! Thank you for this very kind note! xo

  28. Ipsita on April 14, 2018 at 9:34 am

Hi!! I am in love with your books, especially the candy makers. Left my mouth watering the whole time. I loved the suspense too. It was so cool. I also love your 11 birthdays series. I read 11 birthdays so many times until I realized it was a part of a series. Which made everything so much better. I was wondering if you would take some tips from me. I think you should make a new candymakers book. Maybe when Logan, daisy, miles, and Phillip are all older and they come together for another adventure. I hope I get a reply. Thanks for being the best author ever!
    Love,
    Ipsita

    • Wendy Mass on April 24, 2018 at 8:22 pm

Love to hear how much you enjoyed The Candymakers. I hope you get a chance to read The Candymakers and the Great Chovolate Chase. Thank you for being such a “sweet” reader! xo

  29. Jesse on April 15, 2018 at 7:50 pm

Hi! I LOVE your writing! I’ve read all of your books so far. I am a 6th grade synesthete, and I didn’t even realize I had synesthesia until I read A Mango Shaped Space. It was beautiful writing, and I want to know: Does the synesthesia website mentioned in the book (the address of which Jerry gave to Mia) really exist, and if so, can you give me the address? I would want to check it out. Thank you!

    – A Huge Fan Who Happens To Have Synesthesia

    • Wendy Mass on November 5, 2020 at 9:30 am

Hi, that’s so great that you have synesthesia and I’m honored to have helped you discover more about it. At the time, there weren’t really any websites like that, but now I do think it’s easier to connect with other synesthetes online. Check out a site called Mixed Signals (mixsig.net), and that will likely lead you to more communities. I hope that helps and enjoy your colorful world 🙂 Wendy

  30. Shruthi M on April 21, 2018 at 3:23 pm

Mrs. Mass, wouldn’t it be cool if you wrote a book with one of your fan’s? (Me!) Having a chance to write with a big-time author would be a dream come true. I truly love your books.

    • Wendy Mass on April 24, 2018 at 7:09 pm

That is a great idea and would be a lot of fun! If not a book maybe a short story. I will keep this idea in the maybe one day file.

Hi, lots to unpack here LOL. First, I’m honored you chose to do a project on me, and I’m so glad you enjoyed Willow Falls. It hadn’t started out being a series and then somehow there were 5 books LOL. The Last Present was really fun to write because I finally got to send the characters back in time, and I love time travel stories. With the candy wrappers, my goal was to découpage my writing desk, and I gave the candy bar wrappers to an artist to design it for me, and I never got them back 🙁 thank you for reminding me to track them down, I bet your door looks really cool 🙂 Keep reading, and thank you so much for your comments XO. I have another question, too! Are you going to write another book or are you working on a book right now?

    • Wendy Mass on December 9, 2022 at 7:03 pm

The ones since this note were Bob and Robin Hood, I think. 🙂

Hi! I saw the eclipse and it was amazing! At first, we weren’t going to see the full eclipse, but we decided to drive a bit longer and watch it. Every Soul a Star is one of my favorite books EVER, and that’s saying something. My absolute favorite book is probably A Mango-Shaped Space. I loved this book because I love cats(it has made me bawl every time I read it) and because it introduced synesthesia to me. I am now super interested in synesthesia, so thank you for writing A Mango-Shaped Space! I actually have a couple questions about Mia and her synesthesia. Did you ever come up with a full alphabet for her? Or just use the colors and letters you needed? Also, how did you learn about synesthesia and decide to write a story about it? I just wanted to say that The Candymakers(both of them) and Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life are also very good! I haven’t read any of your other books, but I might someday. Thank you! -Jade

Hi! I’m so glad you caught the eclipse, and now the next one is coming up in a year!! So glad you liked Mango, I love the idea of coming up with a full alphabet of colors for her, but I never did it. Maybe for its upcoming 20th anniversary!! Or maybe you can do it for me… ;o). Big hugs to you, so sorry for the delay in them!! xo Wendy

Dear Wendy Mass I recently decided to write a book because I was inspired by you! I also think you should make a new series because the willow falls one ended. I also hope in the future you will make the willow falls books a tv series or movies series. (I’d rate it 5 stars ;p) also I recently got braces and I started to think: I wonder what Rory would have been like if she had braces on top of all that stuff! hehe! anyway I wanted to thank you for writing the willow falls series because if you hadn’t I would never had even thought about trying to write a book! It doesn’t say what Rory’s hair color is in Finally I would like to know! also i’m putting you in my book (because you gave me the idea DUH!) Well best wishes from your biggest fan! -Caroline age 11

    • Wendy Mass on April 1, 2023 at 12:06 pm

Hi! I’d love to hear about your business by now maybe it’s huge! I think her hair was brown (and her bff was blond), I agree it would be very fun to see the Willow Falls books as a movie or tv series. Fingers crossed! I hope you’ve been well, and now I want to add a chapter with Rory and braces!!! Can’t believe I missed that opportunity lol!! Hugs to you!!! xo, Wendy

Hi, I love all of your books.(mainly the candymakers ones and the every soul a star one and the a mango shaped space one) I was wondering if you are ever going to write a sequel to Every Soul A Star. It’s my absolute favorite and I want to hear more about Ally, Jack, and Bree. This seemed like the most relevant post to comment on, so yeah. Also, please write another sequel to The Candymakers. After reading them, I wanted to live in a candy factory. I still do. I like sequels and prequels because then you can learn more about the characters. You can probably expect to hear more from me in the future.

    • Wendy Mass on April 1, 2023 at 2:02 pm

Hi, I’m sure by now you’ve found the sequel to the Candymakers, and coincidentally, that’s the one that includes the characters from Every Soul a Star. That’s the closest they get to their own sequel though. And I agree with you, living in a candy factory would be awesome! All by best wishes to you!! xo, Wendy

  37. Elizabeth on September 25, 2018 at 9:57 pm

I loved all five books in the willow falls series (11Birthdays, Finally, 13 Gifts, The Last Present, and Graceful) and I was wondering if you were going to write any others?
    Thank you,
    Elizabeth

    • Wendy Mass on November 5, 2020 at 9:00 am

Hi, I’m so glad you enjoyed them. I do think about continuing the series with the main characters’ kids, but nothing’s solid yet. You’ll hear it here first. 🙂 Wendy

  38. AAron on November 29, 2018 at 1:25 pm

Hi Wendy Mass, I’m wondering if you are making a sequel to Every Soul A Star, and if you aren’t can you please make one thank you. 🙂

    • Wendy Mass on October 24, 2020 at 8:44 pm

Hi, it’s been in the back of my mind to make a sequel but at this point I did manage to sneak them into The Candymakers and the Great Chocolate Chase – a sequel to my book The Candymakers. So that may be the closest to see them after the events of their own book. Thanks so much for reading it and keep looking up at the stars 🙂 All my best wishes. xo, Wendy

Hi! Love your books. I wanted to know Mia’s grandfather’s first name, since I don’t think you added that in the book. I’m using it for an art project. I loved A Mango Shaped Space, and all the others. Mango is probably one of my favorite characters ever (sorry Mia!) along with Daisy, Logan, Miles, and Philip(sort of. Sorry Philip!). I’m a big fan of your work and I just wanted to “hear” Mia’s grandfather’s first name from the author. THANKS! I love your books!

    • Wendy Mass on October 24, 2020 at 6:03 pm

First of all, that is so lovely of you to say. I know I’m answering this comment way later than when you wrote it so you’re probably no longer working on that art project, but that’s interesting that I never gave the grandfather a first name. How about you choose what name he should have and we’ll go with that one 🙂 PS, I think Philip redeemed himself in book 2 LOL. All my best to you, Wendy

  40. Ally on February 27, 2019 at 3:39 pm

Please make movies for A Mango Shaped Space and the Willow Falls series. And maybe Every Soul A Star too. Those were my favorite by far. Thank you so much for writing these. I loved them so much. And I really hope you make a new book for teens (maybe without so much romance and girly things) thanks again for reading this and writing your books.

    Age 12, Ally

    • Wendy Mass on October 24, 2020 at 8:19 pm

Hi, I see why you liked Every Soul a Star because you have the same first name as one of the 3 main characters! Hopefully by the time you read this you’ll have found more of my books that don’t have romance in them – the Candymakers series would be good one for you; no romance there (except for the love of candy LOL). Thanks so much for writing. xo, Wendy

Hey Wendy Mass! I like your books! I really can’t wait for the next voyagers! )I am really crazy about space and all that stuff.)
I also really like to make books! I have a few on my mind already. How do you get through all that stuff! I have sooooooooo many ideas, I can’t finish the first book! And even then, I make about a hundred changes. Gosh. I didn’t realise writing was so hard! But that’s not going to stop me.
What was your favorite book to wright about? I like Every Soul A Star, but I can’t say that’s my favorite book yet, because I haven’t read all of your books. But your my favorite author so far hands down. 🙂

    • Wendy Mass on November 24, 2019 at 4:05 pm

Thanks so much! It would be hard to pick a favorite book, they’re like my kids! ;o). I hope you’ll keep writing your own stories, if writing whole books feel intimidating (I agree that they’re hard!), just start with short stories and then they’ll get longer.
      Best wishes to you!
      Wendy

  42. Matthew on March 16, 2020 at 9:30 pm

Hi Wendy! I am writing this email on behalf of my six year son, Matthew. He says:

“Hi! I am Matthew and I like your books a lot! Are you going to make the Time Jumpers books up to Book 10? These are my favorite books that you made! I can’t wait for Time Jumpers 5, 6, 7, and 8 and 9 and 10. When will book 5 come out?! Thank you for writing all those great books!” -Matthew Daufelt

    Thanks for your time!

    Ria

    • Wendy Mass on October 23, 2020 at 3:40 pm

Hi to you and Matthew! I am so glad that you enjoyed the Time Jumpers books, I had so much fun putting Chase and Ava in so many fun time periods. As of now, the series only goes up to Book 4, but if that ever changes I will certainly let you know. Keep reading and all my best best wishes to you from me (and from Chase and Ava). I have another series for young readers called Space Taxi that you may enjoy. That one has 6 books. 🙂 Wendy
