Blog about the blog

Okay, I’m staring at a large number of “waiting for moderator” comments, so in the interest of life being short and not wanting to keep you waiting till graduation, i’m going to post a lot of them over the weekend, but will have to answer your questions here instead of individually. Most of the recent questions on the blog are about the next two books. So here’s what I know so far: PI IN THE SKY is coming out June 11. That’s sooner than it sounds. It will be warm then. Warm is good.

The next Willow Falls book is off to my editor, and it now has a title. It will be called THE LAST PRESENT. The title has a few meanings…there’s a time travel element to the story so the word “present” refers to time. Also, Angelina gives someone (can’t say who) one final present at the end. And finally, it’s the last book in the series. (at least in this incarnation of the series). It will be out next fall.

I was THRILLED with all your suggestions in my previous blog for things that you wanted to see in the book. You guys had some GREAT, INSIGHTFUL, CREATIVE ideas, and I was able to get most of them in there. So if you’re wondering if something will be in the book, read through the comments on the last few blogs and you’ll basically have a really good idea of what you’ll see. But to address the questions asked the most often: yes a kiss, but can’t tell you who! yes, you’ll find out more about Angelina, and why Amanda and Leo were using the chalkboards in 13 Gifts, and why Grace went to the hospital at the end of that book, and how the movie turned out from Finally, and how Tara adjusts to being part of a group of friends for the first time. I just saw the suggestion to add a pet–you’re right, it’s weird that no one in the series has pets. Well, unless you count Rory’s ill-fated pet bunny. I’ll try to work it in on the next draft, but the pet ship has probably sailed for this one. And anyway, pets don’t seem to work out so well in my books (see A Mango-Shaped Space. ;o)

A lot of you have asked about movies, so here’s the latest update. The Candymakers and A Mango-Shaped Space are both under option, which means people are hard at work trying to make something happen with them. Could be years though, if ever, but I will FOR SURE update you with any news. I would love to see the Willow Falls series turned into a TV series (one book per year…could work!). So if you know any TV producers…hint hint…

Ok, onto other subjects.

As you can see, my website has gotten a fresh coat of paint, so to speak. I’ll be fine-tuning it, but i hope you like it so far. I’m having fun with the new “quote of the week” on the home page. It will be updated each sunday. Feel free to suggest quotes that you like–on writing, on life, anything. I’ll also be updating the Q&A by the end of January so if you’re doing an author report there should be more stuff there to help you. (BTW, wikipedia has my birthday wrong. if they’d made me YOUNGER, then i wouldn’t complain, but no. ;o)

I love seeing pictures of school projects you guys have done on my books–i’m always honored and touched by all your hard work. I thought I’d add pictures of them to the FUN STUFF section on the site. SO I’ve come up with a special email address where you can send them: schoolprojectsMass@gmail.com. I won’t publish any names/locations with them, but you’ll know it’s yours. First ten submissions get…well, get posted first. :o)

I’m already checking email….

NOOOOOO DON’T MAKE IT THE LAST BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE THE WILLOW FALLS SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! πŸ™

If you change your mind somehow Wendy, please make about 1,000,000,000 more books to the Willow Falls series πŸ˜€ And when The Last Present comes out, I will definitely buy it so you can reincarnate the series inside of a new one.

I totally agree with you!!!!! I seriously LOVE the willow falls series!!!!!~ Plus, I’m a big fan of it!!!!!

    • Sam on March 26, 2013 at 7:04 pm

My favorite book of yours is totally Jeremy Fink and the meaning of life. It totally touched me in the end and I laughed my pants off in almost every chapter. You just have to pay attention to the little jokes then understand them and then its funny. I think it’s so cool that when I turn 13 in a few months I’m going to start my own life string with rocks. It is the coolest book ever, not to mention it’s the first chapter book I ever read!!!!!!!!

      • Ashley on July 11, 2013 at 9:06 am

My favorite book is 13 gifts (I already read it 7 time’s!!!!!!!) I also can’t wait for the last present to come out.

Please never end these Willow Falls books….At school I made everyone call me Tara Rory or Amanda. MAKE MORE BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKS!!!

    • Claudia on August 28, 2013 at 9:05 pm

i love the willow falls books so please keep writing those. they need to make a movie about them!!! oh and a sequel to the candymakers with idk, a different contest and different contestants, maybe taking place in the most boring state, Kansas? your stories can spice up any place in any region (even bohemia and i’m bohemian and i still don’t know what it is) and maybe a story about sports? not, like, statistics or anything but kinda like a cross country runner moving to australia where she runs into ray from 13 gifts. I’ve read that book 9 times and fall asleep every night listening to it!

      • Wendy Mass on September 11, 2013 at 11:41 am

LOL at bohemia. Not sure that’s actually a place. πŸ˜‰
You’ve definitely read 13 Gifts a lot of times! Can’t wait to hear what you think of the sequel. :o)
        hugs!

Hi Nicole! Good to hear from you–sorry about the tears! πŸ˜‰
I don’t think there will be a sequel to mango, but if that changes i’ll let you know. Mia was the first character i created that made it out into the world, so i still think of her, too. πŸ™‚
I’m glad you liked the two Jeremy’s!
        Enjoy PI! πŸ™‚

Your books inspire me so much and they have been my latest craze for the last few weeks after Christmas! I have read Every Soul a Star, and Eleven Birthdays so far, but I am so excited to read A Mango Shaped Space, Finally, and Pi In The Sky.

I know (well I can imagine) how busy you are, but currently I am doing a author report on you and I would appreciate it soooo greatly if you were to respond!!

    I just have a few questions that I couldn’t find online….

    Here they are, please answer!

    1. Who/what were some important influences you had?
    2. What was happening in the world when you were born/growing up?
    3. Is there a message you try to convey in your work?

I look forward to continue reading your books!!!!!!

    Thank you sooooooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Natalie on January 19, 2013 at 1:49 pm

I’ve been wanting to post here for a long time now…. But i didn’t know the right words, i guess.
This may sound corny, or cheesy, but before i read the Willow Falls series, I didn’t know how much of an impact a book(s) can have on my life. I related to things the characters went though, I laughed when something unexpected happened, and i just loved how there was always some mystery in each book. I’m thirteen and live in the city, so the country life in willow falls is like being in a dream world for me. And i feel te books made me a better person. This series means so much to me! :O
Anyway, I’m super excited about The Last Present!!! I’m probably going to cry at the end… But then smile and read the whole series over and over again! πŸ˜€ Thank YOU for writing such amazing books.

NOTE FROM WENDY: Now you’re making ME cry! You’re so sweet, thank you! I’m editing the book right now and just may try to squeeze some tears out of the ending for ya! xo

  27. Haley Michelle on January 20, 2013 at 7:04 pm

Mrs. Mass–I’m ecstatic for the final book in the Willow Falls series. I’ve read 11 Birthdays seven times, and even though I’m fourteen now, it’s still my favorite book of all time. I’m pleasantly surprised by your choice of Amanda as narrator, and even more so by the prospect of time travel–it’s one of my obsessions right now! However, I’m so sad to see the series ending. It’s been with me for the last four years, and it’s such a huge part of my life and has helped in the shaping of who I am today, and it’s depressing that the series is finally coming to an end. Nevertheless, I shall continue re-reading the series all the time, and I’m looking forward to Pi in the Sky. I’ve enjoyed all of your books, and I’m sure I will this one as well. πŸ™‚ I’m an aspiring author, so if there’s any advice you could give me, I’d love it, seeing as you’re my favorite author. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.
    ~Haley Michelle

NOTE FROM WENDY: thank you so much for letting me know how willow falls has been a part of your life. That really touched me! it’s true that this particular storyline is ending, but maybe someday i’ll explore another part of town. As for writing advice, really it’s just all about practicing, and not getting discouraged. keep a notebook, write down any fleeting ideas, your experiences, etc. I really enjoyed writing stories with friends when i was your age. it’s fun to see how ideas bounce off each other. Hugs to you!

    • Haley Michelle on January 21, 2013 at 12:08 pm

Thanks so much for replying! It means so much to me πŸ™‚ Also, thanks for the writer’s advice. I will certainly keep it in mind during my journey, whether I end up published or not. Again, thanks for the advice and the reply—both made my day πŸ™‚
      Hugs to you, too!

    Hi Wendy,
I just wanted to say I love your books! My favourite is 11 Birthdays! But I also enjoyed 13 Gifts and The Candymakers. I am about to read 12 Finally and am quite anxious to use my Scholastic giftcard for Every Soul a Star or one of the Twice Upon a Time series. Still can’t decide!! I did my December book report on 13 Gifts and got an A, so I’m planning to use 11 Birthdays for my Febuary book report. (I know I’m reading them out of order!:) So thanks!!! I have a question, will you be doing any book signings in Ontario soon? I’d really like the 4 books I have by you signed. You’re my favourite author! I just love your books!!! Please let me know soon, I’m anxious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -Emily:)

Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.

    I love this!!!!!!

    Dear Ms. Mass,
OMG!! You don’t even know how excited I am about the new Willow Falls book!! I got the 11 Birthdays book when I was 10, (I am 12 now), and I have read that book 11 times! I have probably memorized it by now! You are honestly an AMAZING writer and If you replied to me, my life would be complete. I am honestly your biggest fan what so ever. I am really sad that the book series is over, but I am looking forward to Pi in the Sky. I love writing and I want to become an author when I’m older and reading your books helps me! (was that sentence gramatically correct?) anyway, happy writing! xoxo, Sydney.

    Hi Wendy,

I love this quote, so I thought I’d share it:

β€œDon’t tell me the sky’s the limit when there are footprints on the moon.” Paul Brandt

I can’t wait for the next Willow Falls book! πŸ™‚

  41. Hannah on January 26, 2013 at 7:24 pm

When you said that the next (and sadly last) book in the Willow Falls series will come out in fall did you mean fall 2013 or fall 2015 because I just finished reading 13 Gifts ten minutes ago and I just HAD to know if there would be another book (even though I was almost POSITIVE there would be another, because of the ending of 13 Gifts, which I wont spoil for those who want to read it or are currently reading it) so I IMMEDIATLY went online to find out and I was THRILLED when I read there would be another book.

-FYI I tend to over explain stuff

-OH and P.S. I LOVE YOUR BOOKS expecially the Willow Falls series

  42. Ann on January 26, 2013 at 8:57 pm

Yayyyyyyy!!!!!! I was the person who wrote the pet comment!!! I can’t wait for the next book!!!

Oh I can’t wait for the new book! I love your books. Your actually my favorite writer. I wanted a new book in the Willow Falls series! It would be so awesome if it was a tv show. I love that series so much. Are there any more books that are coming out in yout Twice Upon A Time series?

  46. Mack on January 29, 2013 at 4:46 pm

I LOVED reading your books, Finally, and 13 gifts. I recieved Finally as a Christmas present after reading twenty times, and I literally couldn’t stop laughing, same with 13 Gifts.

  47. Aubrey on January 30, 2013 at 1:53 am

A Mango-Shaped Space is my favorite πŸ™‚ I love the Candymakers too, and I’d love to see either of them as movies! Every Soul a Sayr would make a great movie too! πŸ˜€

  48. Kait on January 30, 2013 at 3:52 pm

When is The Last Present coming out, approximately?

  49. Jocelyn on January 31, 2013 at 7:01 pm

In school today, we were looking up writers and their websites. My friends and I all love your books. My friend Nathaly is reading your 3rd book in the Twice Upon A Time series and she told me she loved it. So my teacher added you as a writer we can look up. I looked at some of the pictures on your website. My teacher had added Suzanne Collins as a writer we could look up too. I never realized you had met her. Thanks to you,I am going to read Shakespeare’s Secret by Elise Broach. Thanks for writing such great books! Hopefully this flatters you: My teacher says her daughter likes your books and mentions them in class alot. You are my favorite writer.

  50. Ai on January 31, 2013 at 7:51 pm

I can’t wait for the last Willow Falls book to come out! I really enjoyed the series but my favorite book of yours is The Candymakers and I’m excited by the idea of it being a movie. For some reason it never gets old whenever I read it over and over again and I just love it.

  51. Kendall on February 1, 2013 at 11:16 pm

    Dear Mrs. Mass,

You are my favourite author, and Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life and 11 Birthdays are two of my most favourite books of all time (Not saying your others aren’t in my top ten! πŸ˜‰ I can reread Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life, the Willow Falls series, A Mango-Shaped Space, and Heaven Looks a Lot Like the Mall 1 000 000 times, and I already probably have!
When the Jeremy Fink movie first came out, I bought it right away, and I was crying at some points, laughing at others… it truly plays with your emotions. And when I saw you in it giving directions to Jeremy and Lizzy, I was like, “Oh my God, look, it’s Wendy Mass! It’s Wendy Mass!” My brother was watching the movie with me, and he was just looking at me like I was crazy. Oh, well. I go crazy in my head still every single time I watch it (which is a lot)!
I’m constantly recommending your books to my friends, and I can’t wait for more! I am super excited for Pi in the Sky and The Last Present. When the date comes a bit closer, I’ll probably start counting down the days!
My copy of The Last Present is going to be well-worn and tear stained within the release week of it. I can’t believe the series is ending! It truly will be the end of an era.
You have inspired me to write my own book with my little brother. It’s turning out great! Thank you so much for inspiring me with your writing, and more importantly, the heart you truly put into your books.

    Love,
    Kendall

  52. Tara on February 2, 2013 at 12:14 pm

Awesome! I’m still working on Finally. but i’ll catch up by the time the next one comes out!

  53. Parker on February 2, 2013 at 3:47 pm

(As a note, I posted this on another page, but I wasn’t sure if you could see it there, so here goes nothing!)

    Dear Wendy,
Thank you. You are my FAVORITE author. I have read every single fiction book (I think) that you have published. When my school librarian suggested A Mango Shaped Space, I was already interested. When I got a little bit in, I realized that I have synesthesia!! All my letters, numbers, words and names are colored and have β€œword pictures”. One girl in my class has Mia’s synesthesia. I am now very interested in it and have done a LOT of other reading about it. A Mango Shaped Space actually changed my life and for that I am truly thankful. I also love Every Soul A Star, as does my aunt, who doesn’t like reading! You inspire me to write my own stories and I feel your characters are real. I am only a pre-teen but I know a good author when I see (read) one!
    -Parker
P.S. Your first name is bright yellow with blue and brown spots at the end and very soft in a fuzzy kind of way. Your last name is chocolate ice cream in a bowl with a cherry on top. Your full name (if you were to put your first name under your second) looks like a banana split. Yum!

  54. Holly on February 2, 2013 at 4:06 pm

Hi Wendy! Is it okay to call you that? I just wanted to let you know that you are my favorite author! I Am a book lover and I have read many good books but all of yours stand out to me πŸ™‚ And I really hope you read this and reply.
I recently wrote a story called Black and White. It’s about a girl who lives in a world that is totally black and white. No color. Then one one-day something really amazing happens to her. (Come to think of it, the characters name IS Wendy!) I wish I could send it to you. All my friends and teachers that have read it say they love it. (It is actually the first story I have ever completed.) One of the quotes below I based my story on. Try to guess which one. πŸ˜€
When I finally found your website a few weeks ago I was overjoyed to hear you were making another Willow Falls book. I own all three of them and they are the most treasured books on my shelf. I’ve read them all to my sister and she loves them almost as much as I do.
13 Gifts has got to be one one my favorite books of all time! It was actually the first book of yours I ever read. I don’t know what I was expecting but I bought it a my school book fair and instantly read it. I was shocked throughout the whole ending. So many unexpected things happened! It just kept surprising me! I LOVE it when a book does that to me!!! After I finished reading it I talked about with all my friends. I also looked you up and put all your books on my library list (I own most of them now).
As for quotes, I am a collector of them. I LOVE a good, meaningful quote. When I saw that you were going to be doing a quote of the week ever week I was really excited (more great quotes to add to my collection!) I especially love the one you have for this week πŸ™‚ Here are a few you may be able to use:

“There’s nothing wrong with reading a book you love over and over and over. When you do, the words get inside you, become a part of you, in a way that words in a book you’ve only read once can’t.” ~ Gail Carson Levine
“An ending is an ending. No matter how many pages & sentences & paragraphs of great stories led up to it. It will always have the last word.” ~ Sarah Dessen
“There’s a reason why your heart it located on the left. It’s because it’s not always right.” ~Anonymous
“Move on. It’s just a chapter in the past. But don’t close the book, just turn the page.” ~Anonymous
“If today were perfect there would be no need for tomorrow.” ~Anonymous
“Life is black and white. It’s up to you to paint the colors.” ~Anonymous
“Courage is the discovery that you may not win, but trying even when you know you can lose.” ~Anonymous
“The only people that truly know your story are the ones that helped you write it.” ~Anonymous
“Tell a story. Make some light.” ~Kate DiCamillo

Hope you like them! (I also hope I didn’t jabber on for too long :/)

~Holly (my birthday is also in January)

  56. Ally on February 2, 2013 at 8:13 pm

    Dear Wendy,
In your new book is there going to be a new character in it. I hope there is another character because in the other Willow Fall books someone new comes in. I can’t wait till it comes out please let me know when it’s almost out!!! πŸ™‚

  57. Caitlin on February 3, 2013 at 10:09 am

I really love how you make sure to have the time to interact with all your fans. It makes me like you more than just an author. I hope more authors are like you – very generous and accommodating.

  58. Nina on February 3, 2013 at 2:54 pm

Oh please, please, please let there be another Willow Falls book. I really love reading them. they’re like my fave series next to the “The Clique.” I’m really gonna miss Rory, Tara , Amanda, Leo, “Bee Boy”, Jake and everyone else! So sad, but keep on writing. BTW, I have Rapunzel, it’s AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    (Forgot “Bee Boy’s”name. HE HE).

  59. Mary on February 4, 2013 at 7:00 pm

I have now read 11 Birthdays four times and I am planning on reading it a fifth time soon. The Willow Falls series is by far my favorite series and I can’t wait for The Last Present to come out, although I’m sad that the series is over. I read 11 Birthdays first when I was 11 and continued reading the books like that. The characters grew up with me an I love how throughout each of your books, you bring back the old characters and add a new main character. I think it is awesome that the character overcomes a real-life challenge but at the same time it is magical. I also can relate to how the characters let go as they get older (I’m specifically talking about Amanda and Leo). I have also read Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life and just started reading every Soul a Star. Both are amazing but I love how Jeremy and Lizzie go on the adventure together. Thank you for writing all of your books and keep on writing. You have been my inspiration to keep making my writing better.
P.S. Are you going to answer why Amanda and Leo are talking to each other on chalkboards?
(Is it because they want the day to repeat again?)
    Thank you so much!!!!! πŸ˜€

  60. Eva on February 4, 2013 at 7:21 pm

I loved your Willow Falls Series! It’s my favorite of all time! I just finished Finally 12. I really loved how you got in detail with the character! I felt like my 12th birthday all over again! It seemed as if I was Rory myself! I cannot wait to read the finally book!

Go to the Los Angeles Times, Feb 3rd, 2013 Newspaper in the kids reading room section and you’ll see it! I hope you enjoy what i wrote about the book you wrote(13 Gifts), and I also drew a picture of the book!

    – Sadie <3

P.S. You are my favorite author, and I have read most of your books and done a book report on them in my last year's fourth grade class!

I’m reading Every Soul a Star and I think it’s cool it’s making me interested in space I never really thought about it that much I guess Jack didn’t either;) My class is doing a project where we write a letter to our favorite author and I want to do you:) We get to write our letters and send them out it’s really exciting wow I wrote a LOT hope I didn’t bore you to death (that would be bad our author has to be alive!)

  67. Theresa on February 9, 2013 at 10:49 pm

Hello Mrs. Mass! I love all of you’re Willow Falls books. I read 11 Birthdays and I was amazed of how awesome it was! Amanda and Leo were awesome. I love to re-read books, but I usually only read the parts I like. 11 Birthdays is a book I can read cover to cover any day!
About a year later, I found out Finally and I freaked out!!!!! I thought that 11 Birthdays would be a solo book and I was so thrilled. I loved it πŸ™‚ It was really funny (and weird) because Rory is sooooooooooo much like me. I really enjoyed it. I loved how you overlapped characters in the stories and that you used a different protaganist. I loved it πŸ™‚
13 Gifts was the perfect mix of, everything. I loved seeing Amanda and Leo, Emili, Rory, and of course Bee Boy! (aka David) I read it in a few hours and I totally wanted more.
What I love about you’re books is how you add little things from the former books and minor characters that pop up and brighten my day. For example when Rory wouldn’t have make up from Betty or when Amanda said she din’t like the Wizard of Oz………. I think that was so cool.
Thank you so much for you;re work. You have really inspired me as a writer! Thank you for all you do and I can’t wait for THE LAST PRESENT!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello. I just love you and your books so much, you have kind of changed my life with your writing. Right now I am working on your Twice Upon a Time series and was wondering if you will be writing another. I love them. I am attempting to write a novel by the time I am 14 (right now I am 11) and was wondering if you had any advice. I have a plot but I seem to procrastinate. Alot.

PS one of my best friends is doing The Candymakers for her book report, (I recomended it!) and I think she would like me to let you know that she loves it. So did I.

I love all your books that I have read especially the Candymakers (I love daisy) when I grow up I want to be an author just like you.

Do you think you could please have a writing contest or something?

Or you could make a book with ten stories(or more or less) that fans sent without ending that you finished?

Or you could post a ending (or beginning) on your website and fans could start it (or finish it)

Will you ever come to the Yukon? Please?

    I love your books

I CAN NOT wait for the next willow falls book to come out

I really want to read more of your books because I live in a pretty small town so there aren’t very many books In the book store that are older and I couldn’t read when a mango shaped space came out (What!!?!?!? I was two ok) I I can’t find it in the library and I go to school in French and we aren’t allowed to take English books out of the school library

I read the Candymakers on a 8 hour plane ride and I couldn’t put it down and I finished it before I landed

    Luv ya

Hey Wendy! I am so exited i hope the series ends with an answer to all the questions and not I will never ever know what will happen next. I got a kindle fire for Christmas and after i heard that your new book was in the progress i wanted to refresh on Rory, Amanda, Leo, and the friends. I went to the eBook app store and your books were over 10 dollar each. Could you maybe do a one time limited time offer with free eBooks?
Maybe a congratulatory final book for willow falls gift and put the other three books for free?

    Hi, Wendy!
I’m Liz. I’m 10 years old and I live in Virginia. I really like your books and I love Mango. I have two cats of my own, one of them named Bagheera(jungle book) who’s 7 months, and one named Simba(the lion king) who’s almost 3 now. When I grow up, I want to be an author like you or an illustrator. I also want to have a cat that looks like Mango. I’m having trouble thinking of what Mango looks like, though. I can’t find a picture of a cat like that. I’ll keep on trying and writing, though, if you keep on making great books!

OMG!!!!! I can’t believe I have never found your website before!!!! I think I might have been spelling your name wrong, because for some reason it wasn’t until my friend typed ‘Wendy Mass’ in that something actually came up (you have no idea how many Wendi’s are on Facebook.) I CAN’T WAIT for ‘The Last Present’ to come out! I live in Australia, so it might come out a bit later for us, but I can assure you that in our Spring holidays that book will be on my bedside table! My friend Emma and I are obsessed with your books, and you are my second favourite author of all time (sorry, but I am yet to find a book better than Harry Potter). I am so excited for the last Willow Falls book I actually did a little dance before! (Emma’s looking a little freaked out right now). I am also wondering if you are going to write any more Twice Upon A Time books, because they are FANTASTIC! I especially love Beauty and the Beast. BTW, I am pretty sure you are going to need 3 kisses in ‘The Last Present’! Keep on writing and I will keep on reading! Thanks for filling in so many boring Saturdays with your extraordinary books. Marita (and Emma)

I also have a question for you. What would you do if you were me and you try writing, but it just doesn’t seem to you that it’s working out. I LOVE reading and your books have inspired me to right a story of my own but my story just doesn’t seem good enough. Do you have any advice? And p.s your books have helped me with being eleven and twelve tremendously! It’s helped me get through tough times, and now 13 gifts is preparing me for turning 13! Thanks so much!:)

    This is my eccentric request:
James. The guy from Jeremy Fink and the meaning of life. After I saw how he was cast in the movie I knew he needed more of a story… I’m not asking you to Make a book about him (Although that would be awesome) but can you have him show up in one of your books? show that your books aren’t completely in differant universes? I’m sorry, that’s random, but, PLEASE.

NOTE FROM WENDY: Loved James in the movie, too! I’ll keep your idea in mind. :o)

  88. Liz on February 24, 2013 at 8:16 am

    Hi, Wendy!
I’m Liz and I LOVE your books. I’ve read Leap Day, A Mango-Shaped space, and The Willow Falls series ( I can’t wait for the new book). I have two cats myself, named Simba and Bagheera. One time, when I was at the sad part of A Mango-shaped space, Bagheera crawled in my lap and nuzzled my hand to make me feel better(Simba was asleep next to me, in the sunlight).
    Bye for now,
    Liz

    Hi Wendy,
We live in Sarasota, FL. now, but originally from Bellmore Long Island, New York, and I just finished reading your book “The Candy Maker”, along with my daughter, 10 years old!!! We enjoyed reading a chapter or two almost every night, for a couple of weeks! At times, we almost couldn’t put this book down, but it would get too late, being a school night!!! The ending brought tears streaming down my face with my daughter looking at me and saying, “mommy you’re crying”!!! Yes, I was truly moved by the incredible toughtfulness of the main characters and especially of Logan!!! We should all be so caring, forgiving and as modest as he was!!! Thank you for giving my daughter and I a book to remember always! By the way, my favorite candy is “Jr. Mints”, her’s is “Sour Patch Kids”, but she said she would really like to have tried the “Bubbletastic ChocoRockets”!!!!!
    Warm Regards, Lauraine
    Sarasota, FL.

NOTE FROM WENDY: This is so sweet, thank you so much for sharing this with me! I really appreciate your kind words about the end. The book was so hard to write with so many threads to tie up so I worried about that! By the way, i’m with you on the junior mints. πŸ˜‰

  90. Ayesha Khan on February 24, 2013 at 7:47 pm

Hi Mrs. Mass. πŸ™‚ I really love your books and I was wondering if you were going to make another book in the willow falls series. I really love that series and I wish there was another one. So please take this into consideration and maybe you could make another book in the willow falls series? ^^ thank you.

    Sincerely,
    12 year old, Ayesha Khan

  91. Ayesha on February 24, 2013 at 8:01 pm

    Dear Mrs. Mass,
When do you think that “The Last Present” will come out? Because on the comments someone said that it will come out next spring. Does that mean 2013 or 2014? πŸ˜‰ hopefully 2013! I love your books as they are very inspiring to read. When I was 11 I read 11 birthdays and now I’m 12 I read finally but I decided to wanted to read the whole series so I read 13 Gifts. I literally just 5 seconds ago finished 13 Gifts. I’m so happy I love it <3 the end is so suspenseful. I love that about really good books. Thank you for making the best series in the world πŸ™‚

    Sincerely,
    12 year old, Ayesha

  92. Marita on February 25, 2013 at 2:53 am

Hi! This is Marita again from Sydney Australia! I just finished re-reading 13 Gifts, and I am once again puzzling over which of the Willow Falls books is my favourite! Anyway, I was just writing again because I wanted to know whose point of view is ‘The Last Present’ in? Is it Grace’s? Does it change like in the Candymakers? Also, does David end up having a bigger role (as in meeting Angelina)? And will Sawyer be in the book? I love the part in Finally when he tells the person ordering pizza that he has a naked butt! Well, thanks for being a fantabulous author again! Marita
P.S. ‘You’ve got to dance like there’s nobody watching, love like you’ll never be hurt, sing like there’s nobody listening, and live like it’s heaven in earth.’

  93. Carly on February 26, 2013 at 4:33 pm

    Dear Wendy Mass,
I am so excited for the last Willow Falls book. I finished the whole series yesterday, and I was just about to ask if you were planning on making another. I am so super excited for the last book to come out! You are a great author your books are amazing! I read Candy makers in 3 days, Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life in 2 days, and the Willow Falls Series in less than a week! I CAN’T WAIT!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited. I will be the first one to get it! Thank you so much, and I am such a big fan!
    πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚
    Please write back!
    Sincerely, Carly πŸ™‚

  94. Jojo on February 26, 2013 at 7:18 pm

Hi this might be late but, somewhere in the book could you put Angelina saying “The present is a gift.” I think it would kind of fit in this series.

  95. Laura on February 27, 2013 at 4:12 pm

    Dear Wendy,
I can’t wait for the next Willow falls book!!! Do you have any idea when the book might come out?

  96. Courtney on February 28, 2013 at 10:34 am

    Hi Wendy,
I am a huge fan of your books and I am looking forward to reading A Mango Shaped Space. I just finished 11 Birthdays which I really enjoyed and I have some questions. What was your inspiration for writing the book? Why did you write it? What was the idea that you went to the library and researched to write this book?
    Thanks!

    • Wendy Mass on August 27, 2016 at 9:41 pm

I came across a book called The Man Who Tasted Shapes by Dr. Richard Cytowic. I was fascinated by it and thought it would be fun to give the condition to a fictional character.

  97. Carly and Elizabeth on February 28, 2013 at 5:42 pm

    Dear Mrs. Mass,
Our names are Elizabeth and Carly. We have been wanting to write you a note for such a long time, so we hope it in the right words. We have read almost all of your books. Especially with the Willow Falls Series, they brought us through tough times. We are so glad that we will be able to read another, but also sad to see it end. Other than that, I, Carly, read the Candymakers, and I, Elizabeth, am reading it now. We both are very excited it may become a movie!
We also would love the Willow Falls books to become a series, but your books will always be better than any movies they make out of it.
Before I found your books, I never knew how great reading was. I actually felt like I was experiancing it along with the characters when I started reading your books.
    We hope you read this.
You are an amazing author, and will always be our favorite!
Thank you for all you do
    Sincerely,
    Carly and Elizabeth πŸ™‚

NOTE FROM WENDY: AW, thank you guys!! Big hugs to you both (and all of you writing/reading these comments, you guys are just amazing)! xoxo

    Dear Wendy Mass,

I love your Willow Falls books. I like that they are really descriptive and that they are still fun books at the same time. I also love your Twice Upon A Time series. I am just about finished with Twice Upon A Time, Beauty and the Beast, The Only One Who Didn’t Run Away. I’ve already read the one about Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel. PLEASE MAKE A FOURTH TWICE UPON A TIME BOOK!!! I also really want you to write more Willow Falls books. Both series are really cool and really awesome.

  127. Bella on March 19, 2013 at 7:03 pm

    Hi wendy,
My name is Bella and i’m from New Zealand. My best friend gave me every soul a star for my 11th birthday (i’m now 14) and i swear I’ve read it once a month since! It inspired me to research solar eclipses and space has now become a fetish for both my dad and i. I finish school in 2016 and am planning to travel to america to see the august 2017 eclipse. I know it’s years and years away but i am sure there are many people out there that have been inspired by your book to come from all over the world to witness the eclipse. I was wondering if you were planning to go?

Thanks for inspiring me to have a goal. I am excited for the last present and pi in the sky!!!!!!!

    Thanks
    Bella

  128. Natalie on March 19, 2013 at 8:50 pm

    Dear Wendy Mass,

I love your Willow Falls series. They are so descriptive, yet so fun at the same time. I also like the Twice Upon A Time series. I have already read the one about Rapunzel and Sleping Beauty. I am curently reading Beauty and The Beast, The Only One Who Didn’t Run Away. It’s amazing. PLEASE MAKE A THIRD TWICE UPON A TIME BOOK!!! Also, I’m thinking about reading either Leap Day, 13 Gifts, A Mango-Shaped Space, or Every Soul A Star. I can’t wait to read the one I choose; but it better be soon because I’m going on Spring Break on Thursday, and I HAVE to have something to read, so i can’t wait!!!

what is going to be on the cover?

  130. Maddy on March 20, 2013 at 3:09 pm

    Wendy,
I finished reading 13 gifts yesterday, but I didn’t know it was part of a series until I read the end saying there’s a book called 11 Birthdays, so I made my mom at around 6 at night, out of the blue, to take me to Chapters to get it… sadley they didnt have it, but they had Finally (which I also didn’t know existed) and got that! then I thought if there’s another one that’s the fourth book, and then found this website, and read this artical! Then, I ended up here. I love how the genre can be different things instead of how most books just stick with one. I incredibly hope that there is a movie for any of the books, and I CAN NOT WAIT until The Last Present comes out!!! By the way, is it Fall 2013 or 2014? I really hope its 2013! I read the ‘about me’ part and for authors it says you like Jerry Spinelli and my whole class is reading a book by him for school! It’s called Maniac Magee, have you ever read it?
Well, I could go on and on about how much I love this series, but I’ll just say, after one book-it wasn’t even the first- i was hooked on this series. I’m deffidently going to have to read more of your books.

  131. yamenah on March 21, 2013 at 3:41 pm

  132. cat on March 21, 2013 at 11:46 pm

You guys really don’t know why they were using chalkboards? Obviously because they didn’t want to talk for a year so they could see what would happen! Lke maybe Angelina said someone would get hurt, but if they didn’t talk for a year they could help them? Leo and Amanda probably thought it was Tara, but it was actually Grace!!!!
Ms. Mass, I love your books! It’s safe to say I’m your biggest fan!:)

  142. Amy on April 2, 2013 at 6:01 pm

I figured this out after reading finally, having also read 11 birthdays and Mango.
    YOUR BOOKS
    ARE REAL.
they happened, K? Not on this planet, or this universe. But it happened. Even the magicky stuff. Only explanation.
ALSO, reality is relative. That’s how the books are real. They’re just real on, like, a different zoom level.
ALSO,Amanda and leo are my best friends. that’s cuz the books are real.

Also, Wendy, you are an awesome writer. You could write a book about a janitor at MIT and make it fun and warm and thoughtful and touching. people shouldn’t need to read the back covers, because you are incapable of writing a bad book.
    Thank you!! πŸ™‚

NOTE FROM WENDY: I think i’d like to take you home with me!! I’m pretty sure i wrote the willow falls books b/c i’m convinced that there’s got to be some real magic in the world, just around the corner. πŸ˜‰

    Dear Wendy,
I am your biggest fan!! I’ve read your books so many times, and I own the whole Willow Falls series! I think what makes your writing so special, is that you take the real world, and add some magic to it, and it still seems completely real. You also have the ability to make me cry. I usually don’t cry is something is fiction. But when Mango died, I let go, and didn’t try to hold myself back, by thinking: “It’s ok, it’s not real.” But with that book, I just cried. I’ve been reading your books for 3 years, and reread the Willow Falls series at least every three months. Here’s some advice: If it doesn’t defeat what the Willow Falls Series is about, try to provide some insight into who Angelina is, and why she’s magical, how she’s been around for so many generations.
Sincerely, your #1 Fan, Sarah P.
    P.S.
If not to much of a spoiler, could you tell us who is nararating? I have a feeling it’s Leo, Amanda, or Connor!

Hi Wendy!! Me and my friend Aizlinn are HUGE fans. You are my MOST favorite author of ALL time, and I
read ALOT of books. But by far, your books are the best!! I’m SO SAD that The Last Present is the end of the willow falls series, because those are my favorites out of all your books. Maybe you could make a sequel series? Anyway, I love your books PLEASE RESPOND!! πŸ˜€

Hi! You have probably heard the same thing from many other book readers, but, I love your books! You are my favorite author, and I tell all my friends that they should read your books. When suggesting, I recommend one of my favorites: The Willow Falls series. I finished the book “Finally” a few days ago, and it took me only 1 day and a half to read it cover to cover. πŸ™‚

My ultimate favorite is the book, A Mango-shapes space. It makes me cry every time I read it, but I still love it. πŸ™‚

This has been my favorite series since I was in 4th grade, when it first came out!!!! 11 birthdays is the bestest book ever :)))))))) and I can relate so well to Tara and Rory. I love you, Wendy, and I’ve done book projects on A Mango Shaped Space, Every soul a Star, and 11 birthdays. πŸ™‚ It will take me all day to read your books, and I stayed up till 2 in the mornin to read 13 gifts last year and it was sooo worth it! SQEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEA!!!!!!!!!!!! I seriously found out about the last present ten minutes ago and i was jumping up and and down and my parents were giving me really crazy looks…:P you’re my fav author since i was 9 and im tirning 14 in six days! OMIGOD!!!! You are definitely one of- actually- my all time favorite writer!!! I know I just sound like a crazed fan that worships you, but I am different!!! Oh god that sounds stupid. Okay. +baby breath, mama breath, big daddy breath+. Whew!! Let’s start over. I know you probably read so many of these and are sick and tired of them, and maybe you don’t even read them at all, and I know people always say they are your biggest fan, but, in reality, I bet your favorite fan is your family. They inspire you, right? You are a great writer and I have my own website, and just so you know, my website is…. https://sites.google.com/site/hippyhappyhearts/ and I write about you in my website. You inspire me. I know I am writing very choppy, but whateves!!! I can manage. Oh and can I ask you something. For the anti-spam quiz is it that same question for everyone? What is Wendy’s last name? Very interesting if you ask me… So long, farewell, i’ve read every book!! Not to brag and be haughty and cocky, of course. But seriously. Mango shaped space compared to Finally Twelve?
So diverse which is unique in an author. I like that.
    Toodles!!!!
    πŸ˜‰ πŸ™‚ Byeas!!!

I’m SOOOOOOOOOOO happy! The person that runs my book club has a copy of The Last Present before anyone else and our book for book club was 13 Gifts so our book draw was for her like… preview copy(?) of The Last Present!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve been waiting for there to be a new book forever!!!!!!!!!!!!! I read the series a few years ago and when I heard there was a new book I almost fainted! (Slightly overdramatic however I was very happy!)

    You’re a great author!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  167. Natasha on September 19, 2013 at 7:39 am

Wait… don’t we already know why Amanda and Leo were using chalkboards??? *Looking through books* Oh maybe not… maybe I was just using deductive reasoning, I’ll let the rest of you figure it out on your own…
by the way, your series… the Willow Falls series actually made my top 3 favourite series’ shelf, it’s pretty hard to get past 10.

  168. Hamida on October 4, 2013 at 8:26 pm

I love your books! I am ten years old and I recently turned ten yesterday. So about a year ago, I read the, “Candymaker” book and i loved it! I went to my local library to see if i could find any books by the same author. Then a few months after that I read, “Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life” and I loved it then I went to my local library again to find a book by the same author, but i couldn’t find any. I knew the author sounded familiar, (I read the “Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life” in my classroom library) Then i read, “11 Birthdays” from my school library and I loved it. I went to my school library to find more books by the same author and I found, “Finally” and I fell in love with the book. Then I decided to search you up and I found all of your books. Then I knew that you wrote a lot of my favorite books. Now I am trying to get my mom to buy all of your books because they are so good and not in my local library, class library or even school library. Do you know if you can get all of your book in a big set for a cheaper price. Maybe i will use my birthday money and maybe dip into my allowance bank. Anyway I love your books!

    • Wendy Mass on October 8, 2013 at 10:40 am

So glad you tracked down so many of them and liked them. :o) I think there was going to be a boxed set of the birthday series but not sure that ever happened. Otherwise i’m sure your library can get them on loan if they don’t have them. Happy reading! :o)

  173. Hailey on March 8, 2014 at 10:35 pm

Hi, I just wanted to say, I think u r one of my favourite authors. I am very sad to see the willow falls series ending. I love that series and I just finished the last book: the last present. It is a very beautiful story. It makes me think about what I do in life more.
I understand that this is the last book in the series but if you ever think on continuing this series by one more book, we will all be really happy!! ( we as in everyone writing comments. I hear everyone is a BIG fan!!!) of course lots of people that haven’t written a comment knows that your books are still awsome!!
If you don’t feel you want to write a new book in this series, maybe consider writing a series close to this one but still really unique!!
you are very inspiring. I love all your stories. They have changed my life, I think about what might be hidden behind closed doors. My personality has changed since I have read these books. I know some people might be thinking: they are just books!! But for me they are more than books. Wendy, you are a great writer no matter what anyone says. Keep doing what you love.
    – sincerely,
    Your bestest fan,
    Hailey<3

    Keep doing such great work!

  174. Shelby on March 18, 2014 at 8:49 pm

Hi! So in school we have to pick one of our favorite authors, and record literary devices in two of their books. I chose you and I used your books, Finally and 13 Gifts. So anyway, we have to do an essay about your author and the books you choose. Any background information that would be cool to include? Any style or theme (authors craft!) that you usually write about? Thank you so much! You are such an inspiration to me! I’ve read your books only about a million times each!!!:)

Thank you, thank you, thank you,
    Shelby:)

    • Wendy Mass on August 10, 2016 at 6:29 pm

Lots and lots of background on my site. I hope you find the info you need. Thank you for choosing me!

  175. Shelby on March 25, 2014 at 8:50 pm

    Please let Amanda narrate it!!!

  176. Annie on March 29, 2014 at 9:27 am

I’m really sad that the series is ended…….there’s still so much left unknown at the end of the Last Present! I also really would have liked to get to know the character Grace more……that’s actually my little sister’s name and she’s small for her age too!

Anyways, I have some ideas for more books you could add to the series (nudge nudge, wink wink). One could be David’s fourteenth birthday (and yes, I know it wouldn’t have been as big of a deal as his Bar Mitzvah, but still) and you could have a new girl move to Willow Falls in the next one, and she has a Quincenara. Just an idea! Actually, two ideas, but still! I love these books so much!

  177. katie on May 27, 2014 at 4:45 pm
