Author Pals

I’ve been lucky enough to spend time with some of the writers for kids and teens who I admire most in the world. Here are some pics from different events. If you’re looking for great books (and who isn’t?) I’ve suggested one book title per author. Sorry that I’m in all the pictures—I’d photoshop myself out if I knew how! Names are listed from left to right. You can either click on each photo to make it larger, or rest your cursor on them and the captions will pop up. New additions will be added to the beginning.

Me and Suzanne Selfors whose "Smells like Dog/Pirates/Treasure" series is inspired and hilarious.
Me, Pseudonymous Bosch, Adam Gidwitz. Two of my favorite middle grade writer dudes. Start with Pseudy's The Name of this Book is Secret and Adam's A Tale Dark and Grimm (but not before bed!)
me, Trenton Lee Stewart. The Mysterious Benedict Society books are brilliant and i am in awe of his talent.
me, Lauren Oliver. So many great books for all ages! I started with "Delirium"
Sharon Draper, me. Totally in awe!!!
Tom Angleberger, me. As funny and warm as his books! (and we share the same audiobook narrator :o). "Origami Yoda" baby!
me, Kathryn Erskine who is so kind and generous I want to take her home with me. Start with the Nat'l Book Award Winning "Mockingbird"
Me and the super-fabulous and inspiring Bruce Coville. Try Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher.
Me and RJ Palocio, author of the wonderous book, Wonder. We are trying to be cool in our shades.
Me and Eoin Colfer. Okay, seriously. I must have been a 12-year-old boy in a past life because I am obsessed with the brilliance and hilarity of the Artemis Fowl series and everything Eoin Colfer writes. Someone will have to pry the signed book from my hands.
Me and Rick Riordan. If you haven't read The Lightning Thief yet, get on that.
Me and Cassandra Clare, author of the spellbinding Mortal Instruments series. Start with City of Bones.
Me and Suzanne Collins. Little known book called The Hunger Games. Just. Totally. Brilliant.
Katherine Patterson and me. Wow. Bridge to Terabithia. First book to make me cry. Still does. She's amazing.
Me and Gordon Korman. So many adventure-filled books to choose from, but I’d have to vote for Son of the Mob.
Lois Lowry (one of my all-time literary idols) and me. Who could choose between The Giver and Number the Stars? Not I.
Me and Carrie Ryan. The zombie apocalypse was never as page-turning as in The Forest of Hands and Teeth.
Me and Lisa Graff. Umbrella Summer is a beautiful book.
Chris Grabenstein, me, and the unstoppable force that is R. L. Stine. No one writes funny ghost story/mysteries like Chris. Start with The Crossroads. And with R.L. Stine, it’s all about Goosebumps for me.
Me and Deborah Wiles. Her newest, Countdown, is a moving and masterful new approach to the novel.
Richard Peck, me. He's such a brilliant writer and one of my childhood idols, so this was a big moment for me. How to choose just one favorite? I loved The River Between Us, and so will you.
Me and the super-sweet Cornelia Funke, whose books I'm crazy about. Dragon Rider is spellbinding!
Sara Pennypacker, me. Who wouldn’t love the irrepressible Clementine? It’s the pitch-perfect chapter book.
Judy Blundell and me. How awesome was What I Saw and How I Lied? National Book Award-winning awesome!
Marie Rutkoski, me, Lisa Ann Sandell. Marie wrote the fantastical Cabinet of Wonders (a title I immediately coveted!) and Lisa Ann's Song of the Sparrow is a beautiful twist on Arthurian legend.
Nan Marino, me. Her debut novel, Neil Armstrong Is My Uncle and Other Lies Muscle Man McGinty Told Me made me laugh and cry in all the right places.
Me and (the very tall) John Hulme, who along with Michael Wexler, wrote the inventive and all around fab series The Seems.
Me and Margaret Peterson Haddix, master of the science-fiction thriller and a really sweet person! Start with Among the Hidden, and go from there!
Eric Berlin and me. A new genre—the puzzle novel! If you love puzzles and games (and who doesn’t?) you’ll want to read The Puzzling World of Winston Breen
Me and Ridley Pearson. I’m a huge fan. Peter and the Starcatchers (co-written with the inimitable Dave Barry) is a beautifully written adventure.
Me and Roland Smith. Peak is just one of his many edge-of-your-seat adventures. His life story is as fascinating as his books!
Me and the prolific Neal Shusterman. I don’t know how he writes so many books (and movies!), and they’re all great. Might as well start with The Schwa Was Here.
Coe Booth, me, and E.R. (Emily) Frank (seated). Two of the finest writers for older teens anywhere. Start with Coe'sTyrell and Emily's America. Powerful, awesome writers!
Kieran Scott and me on a sunny day. Kieran and her alter ego Kate Brian Amaze me with how many fun and fabulous books for older teens "they" can write. Her latest as Kieran is Geek Magnet, or you can dive into the Private series by Kate!
Me and Scott Westerfeld. I’m a huge fan of his UGLIES series. And all his other books. Basically I’m one of his dedicated followers.
Me and Nikki Grimes (and fall foliage!). A truly gifted poet and storyteller, BRONX MASQUERADE is so powerful it will make you want to write poetry.
Jack Ferraiolo (The Big Splash), Nancy Viau (Samantha Hansen Has Rocks in Her Head), Courtney Sheinmel (My So-Called Family) and me.
Brian Selznick, Sarah Weeks, and me. Brian won the Caldicott Medal for his amazing and beatiful novel & picture book all-in-one THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET, Sarah's book SO B. IT is a totally unique story that I couldn't put down. They were too cool for name tags. Seriously, they are very cool. I hoped some of it would rub off. It didn't.
Michael Buckley and me. Start with the first in the fab SISTERS GRIMM mystery series, and keep going!
Donna Jo Napoli and me. SO many great, award-winning books to choose from! Her newest is The Smile.
Dan Gutman, the nicest guy you could meet, and me. All his sports books are great, or you could start with THE HOMEWORK MACHINE.
Tor Seidler and me. THE WAINSCOTT WEASEL is a beautiful book in the tradition of Charlotte's Web. And really, what higher praise is there than that?
Lisa Yee and me. Lisa is the author of the touching and really funny MILLICENT MIN, GIRL GENIUS.
John Green and me. I'm a big fan and it was very fun to hang out with him. (My dad always argues that "very fun" is incorrect grammar but hey, he refuses to turn on a computer so he'll never see this! But I digress!) Paper Towns is just beyond brilliant and amazing.
Me and Shannon Hale. If you love fantasy (don't we all?) start with THE GOOSE GIRL and you won't go wrong.
Me and the amazing and gracious Sonya Sones. I love all her novels-in-verse, but if I had to pick one, I'd say start with ONE OF THOSE HIDEOUS BOOKS WHERE THE MOTHER DIES. It's just great. And a lot funnier than the title would have you believe.
Me and Pam Muñoz Ryan after we gave a presentation together. ESPERANZA RISING is beautiful and inspiring. So is Pam.
Wendy Corsi Staub and me, after 12 years (!) of trying to meet in person. Wendy C.S. created the YA series THE LOOP in the mid-nineties, and I wrote one of the books in the series. It was my first gig, and if you look really hard, you just might find a copy. Wendy writes a ton of books, but her latest YA books are a series called LILY DALE about a real-life paranormal town. Captivating!
Me and Gail Carson Levine, author of the wonderful ELLA ENCHANTED and many other great fairy tale retellings.
Carolyn Mackler, author of THE EARTH, MY BUTT, AND OTHER BIG ROUND THINGS (who by the way is 8 months pregnant here but now has a beautiful baby boy!), me, Rachel Vail, whose next book is IF WE KISS, and the sweetest most supportive person ever and an icon to us all—Judy Blume. Do I need to say what she has written? :o)
The amazing Kirsten Miller who wrote one of my top three favorite books of the year—KIKI STRIKE: INSIDE THE SHADOW CITY. Stop what you\'re doing and read it now. Seriously.
Me and Lauren Tarshis, my kindred spirit and author of one of my other top 3 faves, the beautiful EMMA JEAN LAZARUS FELL OUT OF A TREE.
Me and Nora Baskin, whose IN THE COMPANY OF CRAZIES is a really brave and insightful book. Plus it has a lollypop on the cover.

Carolyn MacCullough, who wrote STEALING HENRY and other truly lovely books, and moi.

Meg Cabot and me. She\'s the one in the tiara. :o) My fave book of hers is ALL AMERICAN GIRL.
The inimitable Andrew Clements, who wrote THINGS NOT SEEN, me, and the lovely Dr. Kathryn Schneider who is the creator of the Schneider Family Book Award through the American Library Association.
Me and Mariah Fredericks whose latest is the page-turner,CRUNCH TIME. She also wrote my fave chick lit book—FATAL DISTRACTION.
Me and Megan McCafferty who wrote the hysterical Jessica Darling series, beginning with SLOPPY FIRSTS.
Julie Anne Peters, me, David Levithan. Julie wrote LUNA, which I could NOT put down, and David\'s latest is THE REALM OF POSSIBILITY, the greatest \"novel in poems\" on the planet. I cannot say enough good things about these folks or their books. THEY ROCK!!!
Annual ladies\' lunch full of good food (Carolyn always chooses the best places) and camaraderie about the strange career we all chose. From left to write (get it? ok, that was bad): (top) Julia DeVillers (who wrote the very cool HOW MY PRIVATE, PERSONAL JOURNAL BECAME A BESTSELLER which became A Disney Channel movie called READ IT AND WEEP), me, Rachel Vail. Me and the amazing and generous Linda Sue Park, who won the Newbery for her beautiful book, A Single Shard.
Sarah Littman and me. Sarah\'s Confessions of a Closet Catholic cracked me up, especially coming from a fellow \"Nice Jewish Girl.\"
Me and Amy Timberlake. I loved her debut novel, That Girl Lucy Moon.
Nancy Werlin and me. Nancy writes YA thrillers like the National Book Award nominated The Rules of Survival that keep me on the edge of my seat.
MJ Auch, me, Ellen Wittlinger. MJ has written so many great kids books. Who wouldn’t love a book called The Princess and the Pizza? She also has synesthesia, which is so cool! Ellen’s books, like her newest, Parrotfish, are so important and so great.
Gregory Maguire is so talented and WICKED cool. Get it? Wicked! And he has an amazing singing voice.
Me and the legendary Barbara Seuling, whose book How to Write a Children’s Book and Get it Published was the first—and best—book on the subject I ever read.
Sara Zarr’s first novel, Story of a Girl, was nominated for the National Book Award. ‘Nuff said!

Me and Rebecca Stead, whose inventive debut novel, First Light, is keeping me reading late into the night. She just won the Newbery for When You Reach Me! How awesome is that???
Lauren Myracle, notorious children\'s lit advocate Walter Mayes, me. Lauren (queen of the IM novels starting with TTYL) is pretending to be really short and I\'m sort of leaning up to highlight how really tall Walter is. He didn\'t get the nickname Walter the Giant Storyteller for nothing. I wish I was cool enough to put a pink stripe in my hair but I\'m just sooo not. Lauren totally is though!
Paul Feig, me, Tony Abbott. Paul (who you may know as the creator of the brilliant-but-canceled Freaks and Geeks) enters the middle-grade fiction world with the out-of-this-world adventure IGNATIUS MACFARLAND, FREQUENAUT! The prolific and wonderful Tony Abbott blew me away with FIREGIRL. Start bugging him for a sequel now.
