Movie News!

Okay, so I can finally tell you guys when the movie version of Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life is coming out…well, sort of. It might still be hitting a big screen here and there in the next few months, but if you don’t happen to live near “here” or “there”, you can still see it…and soon!! As in 6 weeks from now! The official release date on DVD and digital download (like Netflix, iTunes, etc,) isn’t for another 7 months or so (final date to come when announced)…BUT Walmart is too excited about the movie to wait, so they have the exclusive right to sell it starting October 4th!! So get thee to your local Walmart and pick up a copy or two. Hey, it cost less than 2 tickets and a popcorn and ya get to watch it as many times as you want!

I got to go to the recording studio in NYC to record the first chapter of the book, which is going to be included as one of the extras on the DVD. It was a lot of fun, and only a little intimidating! I’m such a big fan of audiobooks, and I loved getting to meet two of the voice actors who’ve recorded some of my books–Kathleen McInerney read all three of the “birthday books” (11 Birthdays, Finally, and 13 Gifts) and made them sound totally different, and Mark Turetsky recorded The Candymakers (all four voices!!) and was the voice of Jack in Every Soul a Star. I LOVED the jobs they both did, and after getting a small taste of the experience, am even more in awe of their talent. If you haven’t tried listening to a book yet, I highly recommend it.

Below is a sneak peek at the poster for the movie, and the tie-in cover of the paperback that will release on October 4th as well.

Movie poster above….book cover below…

I’m working on getting the final copy of the trailer, and as soon as I have a link I’ll post it here.

I’m going to see the movie this weekend and I’ll report back on it!’

I’d love to hear your thoughts on all this!

  8. Lydia on August 30, 2011 at 10:20 am

This is TOTALLY awesome Wendy! I can’t WAIT to check out the trailer!

  9. Lydia on August 31, 2011 at 11:26 am

Okay, I just saw the trailer!
And…well…to tell you the truth, I’m a little scared. I hope that the movie, assuming it hasn’t strayed TOO far from the book, is done well. By that, I pretty much mean that I hope the movie doesn’t feel…how should I put this? Melodramatic, maybe? I hope it won’t be like that, though! I just loved the book so much that I’m not sure the movie will compare, no matter how good it is! ๐Ÿ™‚
When is this going to be in theatres again?

  10. Sammie on September 1, 2011 at 7:02 am

  12. Ingrid H. on September 2, 2011 at 9:13 am

Awesome! The trailer was really cool! I’m kind of glad that it’s not coming to every theater, since it’s sort of an off-beat book, and that would make it more main stream. Congrats Wendy!

  13. Trinity Rose on September 4, 2011 at 5:28 pm

  20. K on October 5, 2011 at 9:43 am

Did you find out anything from Walmart? Still curious (and waiting patiently . . .)

Note from wendy: HI! I’ve been getting pictures of it in the stores, so it should be there…look on the New Release rack under The Lion King.. Did you ask anyone at the store? If you still can’t find it let me know the store location and I’ll check with the film’s distributor. Thanks! (I’ll update the post with a pic, too)

  21. K on October 5, 2011 at 2:16 pm

I got it!! Thank you! My son reads this book over every year and I never knew why. He finally told me that this is one of his favorite books (and you should know he reads a lot!) Now a teenager and in high school, he convinced me to read it and I also loved it. I made my best friend read it and then her husband. He ended up buying a copy for his entire work team. Before Christmas, we found out that there was a movie. One of my son’s “Santa” gifts this past year was movie tickets to see this movie. He was still waiting to collect this last Christmas present until today! Even though we can’t see the movie in a theater, we have planned a big movie viewing party this weekend with all of our friends who also love the book. We even made our younger son read it and HATES to read. He just finished last week and told me that if all books were like that, he would read all the time. So if you are in the Atlanta area this weekend, stop by and watch it with us!

NOTE FROM WENDY: I’m so glad you found it! I hope everyone enjoys it!! (and hey, at only $12, you came out ahead! :o)

    • M on November 26, 2011 at 12:55 pm

where did u find the movie?! I can’t find it anywhere!!!!

NOTE FROM WENDY: I’m sorry it’s so hard to find! I think the problem is that once a Walmart store sells out of it, they’re not restocking. It should be available on their website soon, and i’ll announce that when it happens. But in early March it will have it’s full, nationwide release, so you’ll be able to get it lots of places, including streaming it, that sort of thing.

  22. Rachael on October 16, 2011 at 12:54 pm

I am SO excited! I love your books and I just finished A Mango-Shaped Space (litterally like an hour ago and by the way-luved it!), but the first book I read by you was Jeremy Fink and The Meaning Of Life-It is my fav book ever! I just watched the movie last night and I am also going to collect rocks during important days of my life!

p.s. I think the next movie you make should be for A Mango-Shaped Space. I feel it would be really cool to see the world from a Synesthete’s eyes-in this case Mia’s!

  23. Patrick on November 6, 2011 at 10:27 am

    Hi Mrs. Mass!!!

My name is Patrick and I love your book The CandyMakers. Will you do a sequel on it?

    Please reply,
    Patrick

NOTE FROM WENDY: I’m glad you liked it! I might do something like 4 shorter stories, 1 for each character, but it would have to be a little while from now because I have two more books to write first. I’ll announce it on the blog if it happens! :o)

  24. Olivia Srednicka on November 11, 2011 at 6:00 pm

    Wendy,
I have not read all your books but, I read a lot. So far my favorite one is 11 birthdays. I did not read Jermy FInk and the meaning of Life but, I will soon. I would REALLY like you to make as much movies of as much books as possible. I always read and see the movie to see the comparisions and diffrences. I think that’s real neat.
    YourFan,
    Olivia

  25. Renee on November 22, 2011 at 11:10 am

My daughter read your book and loved it! For a school assignment she has to read a book and watch the movie to compare them. We heard that the movie would only be available at Walmart, but we haven’t been able to find it in any of our local Walmarts (Columbia, SC) or on Walmart.com. Do you have any other ideas of where to find it? We are getting desperate…the assignment is due Mon. November 28. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you!

    Hello Mrs. Mass!
My friend Patrick told me about your blog, and he said it was amazing, and it really is. Like him, I read The Candy Makers, and thought it was one of the most wonderful books of all time, including Eleven Birthdays, which was amazing. Are you thinking of making any new books, other than short stories?
    I love your blog!

Ms Mass I have an idea for a book that you could write, it’s about 4girls that are the best of the best of friends and they are in 5th grade together, the problem is they will all be split up to different middle schools the next year and they are on a mission to stay together. When it doesn’t work they find new friends and they forget the friendships they had. ( this is the first book because this is a real story about my friends and I ) the main character would be me Kylie because I was the one who is in a whole different district I play volleyball love sports , Taren is a SHORT bbf of mine, Jorden is a all solfball person, and Ally ( Alondra ) a nice person kinda a girly girly, but not totally
    Characters and siblings-
    Taren- an older sister Kara
    Ally- older bro
    Jordan- little bro
    Kylie- big bro 14 bailey

    PLEASE please reply
    Kylie

    Wendy, I LOVE U!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE the Willow Falls birthday books!!! BEST SERIES EVER!!!!!!!!! I am now reading the last present. This is my second time reading it. (I first started the series last year.) Amanda is my favorite character. If there was a move series of the birthday books then I would LOVE to be her in the movie, but I don’t want to be all famous like Jake Harrison was. The characters seem SO REAL!!!! I just want to go, and talk to them! I WANT TO LIVE IN WILLOW FALLS NOW! But I don’t think it exists! All of the books in the series seem like they are all written for me, because the words are not too hard, or too easy and they are SO FUNNY!!!!! Well, this comment is really long. I will NEVER forget these series!

I LOOOOOOOVE the Willow Falls series! I literally binge read the last two for all of yesterday. I’m also a big writer, and the books are very good inspiration for me. This is probably my second favorite series (behind Harry Potter). I love all the characters, and how all of it comes together in the end, it’s so…magical! My favorite character to read is probably Amanda. Crossing my fingers for the movies!!!!!!!
Question: Which is your favorite character to write, out of Amanda, Rory, Tara, and Grace?

First, you are so kind to have embraced the books in that way and from a fellow writer, no less! I would say Amanda is my favorite character as well because I’ve known her from the first page of the first book so she feels like a daughter. I had the most fun writing Rory’s story because she took everything with such good grace (for the most part LOL). Fingers crossed for a movie as well. If you haven’t already, check out NaNoWriMo’s Young Writer’s Program ๐Ÿ™‚ All my best wishes and thank you for visiting Willow Falls so many times. xo, Wendy.

Um just want to know but is ANYBODY going to make a Willow Falls (Birthday) series movie????? I would love to see how their relationships unfold in a movie. Also, I loved BOB, Candy Makers, (1 and 2), every soul a star, and every other book you have ever written! Again, I WISH THE BIRTHDAY SERIES WOULD BECOME A MOVIE!!

    • Wendy Mass on October 23, 2020 at 2:25 pm

Wow thank you so much for reading all of those! I am giving you a big virtual hug from here. The series has been optioned for movies/TV but it can be a really long process so fingers crossed! I will let you know for sure if that ever happens. Hugs, Wendy

    Dear, Ms. Wendy Mass
I donโ€™t really know how to address you as so I am jut going to call you Ms. Wendy Mass. I know that everyone is writing their messages in 2011-2015, but I wanted to see if anyone would comment on mine( I really want Ms. Wendy Mass to comment) since mine is all the way in 2020. I really want the Willow Falls series to be a movie and if that would happen that would be AMAZING. Also, if it does become a movie I would like to try out for either Rory or Taraโ€™s roles because I feel like I am so much like them and I can relate to them SO much, so if Ms. Wendy Mass sees this please take this in to consideration, that would mean A LOT to me. I am a 7th grader who finished the entire Willow Falls series in 5 days, but now that am done with it I miss them. Ms. Wendy Mass you did an OUTSTANDING job with the characters they felt so real that I missed them.
    Please comment.

Sincerely your biggest and most recent fan, Aditi, Age 12, Florida

I loved your letter and your passion about the books and life comes through loud and clear. I can definitely write a book faster than I can remember to check blog post comments lol so please forgive me. I would love to see a Willow Falls TV show or movie and it is still under option (which means people are hopefully hard at work at making it come to life!) and when I know more, so will you ๐Ÿ™‚ Willow Falls isn’t a real place (that I know of) but I wouldn’t be surprised if it existed somewhere. Rory and Tara were two of my favorite characters as well; poor Rory lol. Thank you again for reaching out! xo

Sending you a big hug from up north,
      Wendy

    Hi Wendy Mass,

I LOVE your books soooo much that I cried like 20mins ago about finishing your last book in the willow falls series. Your books(willow falls series) bring me to another world, and I am going to re-read the whole willow falls series about 1 million times! Can you please write another book in the willow falls series with the same characters? I REALLY REALLY want the willow falls series to become a show or movies. I hope they get picked!
    Sincerely,
    10 year old Dilnoor
P.S when do you think the movies/show will come out if it got picked soon?

    • Wendy Mass on November 25, 2022 at 5:16 pm

I’m so glad you enjoyed the Willow Falls series! They were so much fun to write and I miss those characters too. Maybe I should reread them myself LOL. I have actually listened to them on audio which was a really cool experience because it gave that distance from me writing them. I can’t promise there will be more books in the series but I can promise that if it becomes a movie or TV show I will absolutely let you know :).

      All my best wishes,
      Wendy
