LO AND BEHOLD

Greetings and salutations! Been a while. Hope you’re happy and healthy! I’ve been hard at work on my latest project, a graphic novel called LO AND BEHOLD. It has to do with virtual reality, and moon trees, and lots more that will make sense if you read it (which should be sometime in 2022!). There will be some super-cool augmented reality parts to the book that I’m really excited about.

For anyone who has a copy of BOB…if you follow the instructions on the comic book page below, you’ll get a nice surprise! (click to put it on its own page, then click again to make it bigger/clearer).

As always, if you’d like a book personalized for the holidays (or any time), call my local bookstore (Sparta Books) at 973-729-6200. They’ll call me, I’ll come in and sign them, and off they go to you.

Back to work I go. (heigh ho)

Happy holidays to all!

xo

    Hi,

I just wanted to let you know a few things! So, first of all, Finally is one of my favorite books of all time. I love Rory like a friend and I love the message and I love that waiting is such an important factor in it. I’d like to tell you a few things that I’m personally waiting for (besides the whole world-to-be-normal-again thing). I’m waiting until I turn 18 this year, because, much like Rory, there are so many things that my parents have told me I can do when I turn 18! I can get a second piercing, I get my braces off, I get new glasses, I’m off to college… The list goes on.
But when I start to get impatient for these things, I re-read Finally. Rory’s personality is so pure and optimistic and she helps me remember to be content with where and who I am right now, while at the same time having big dreams and striving to be the best person I can be. You never know how one little act of kindness can show love and hope to a whole family!
It’s a book that I hold close to my heart because the first time I read it I was almost 12 and it seemed like you’d written a book about my life. Now, when I read it again, it’s like visiting an old friend who is full of wisdom… and it still feels like it’s about me. I will never outgrow it. I discover something new every time I read it. So, thank you, Wendy Mass, for writing a story that became part of me and is relevant to me even today. I pray you’re having a blessed day!

    Thank you,
    Marian

    • Wendy Mass on August 3, 2022 at 2:49 pm

Hi Marian!! Thank you so much for your truly thoughtful and deep letter, it made my eyes swimmy! (and not in the way it did in the book when Rory tried contacts ;o). You can tell by the delay that I’ve been waiting for that “normal” feeling again, too. Finally surfacing and finding these letters (no pun intended on FINALLY!, but hey, it works!). I’d love to know how you’re doing now that all those milestones have been reached for you. Please reach back out if you see this. Sending hugs to you from me and Rory (poor girl, she got herself in some crazy situations that I still laugh about, but thank you for finding the deeper theme in that one. You rock!).
      xo

    Hi Wendy!!
I’m a HUGE fan!! I’ve read the Willow Falls series 5 times each, Jeremey Fink and the Meaning of Life 4 times, Every soul a Star 3 times, and Pi in the Sky 3 times! (is that creepy? I hope that’s not creepy. I’m trying not to be creepy). I LOVE your books SO MUCH!! I heard that tomorrow, April 22nd is your B-day, so Happy Birthday, Wendy!! I can’t wait for your new books and can’t wait to read the Candymakers 2!!! Love you so much!
    Your Biggest Fan,
    Rodas Meheretu

You are so sweet for thinking of me. I’m sorry it took so long for me to see this; I’m not very good at posting these LOL. I’m honored that you read my books so many times and you sound so much like how my daughter would write to someone whose books she really likes. Thank you again for reading them and for being so awesome 🙂 Wendy

  6. Sarah Roan on April 21, 2020 at 6:52 pm

Hi! I really love the birthday books! My friend introduced me to them, she is your biggest fan. She told me that tomorrow is your birthday so I wanted to say “happy birthday!” You are really an inspiration to me. I am curious though, how do you come up with your books? I would really like to know, so, that is all. Happy Birthday again, bye!

    • Wendy Mass on October 23, 2020 at 3:28 pm

Thank you for the birthday wishes even though I didn’t see this on time LOL. My ideas usually come from something that I see so I come up with the plot before the characters. Every writer approaches stories a little differently, but that’s how it usually works for me. Thanks so much for the kind words and hugs to you and your friend 🙂 Wendy

    Dear Wendy,

I’m living in a COVID world at the bottom of the world… New Zealand. I am a primary school teacher and my school, in fact my country is in lockdown. We have been for the past 7 weeks!

Good news though! We are going back to school next week. I am so excited and so are the 29 learners in my class. I was on a Zoom meeting today with my class and I was asking for recommendations for what book we could read. A lovely 10 year old, Eileen recommended your book – ‘A Mango Shaped Space.’ She described it, and talked about it in such high regard, I myself was excited. So excited, I’ve tried to purchase it, however… I can’t find a copy in NZ and I have discovered that I can’t buy an E-book. The problem with wondering it from Amazon/ Book Depository is that is not a lot of freight coming into NZ (our borders are closed) and it will take weeks. We begin school on Monday the 18th of May.

Is there any chance that I can purchase an ebook from you?

I hope you are safe and well in what we in Nz call you ‘bubble’

    Kind regards,
    Charlotte McMurtrie

    • Wendy Mass on August 3, 2022 at 1:12 pm

Hi Charlotte! I’m so sorry that I just saw this now! I think we may have connected through regular email, but if not, please reach back out and I’ll get you a copy if you haven’t already. All my best to you and students, sending long distance hugs!!
      -Wendy

  8. Ally on May 26, 2020 at 6:36 pm

Here’s a quick story on how you’ve (Wendy Mass) changed my life. When I was 8 I went on a camping trip with my cousin. She’s 2 years older than me. She lent me her copy of 11 Birthdays. I have read that book so many times since then. Now I am 14. Two years ago she committed suicide. Now when I read your book I can remember when she gave it to me. I remember all the fun times we had together. Thank you for giving me something to have so I can remember her. Thank you for writing such an amazing book. I love every single one of your books although the Willow Falls series are my favorite.

    • Wendy Mass on October 23, 2020 at 3:26 pm

First, I am so very sorry to hear about your cousin and what you all must have gone through. I am honored the book has been able to help you keep a part of her with you. I’m glad it launched you on a trip through Willow Falls and provided companionship through some dark days. Thank you so much for sharing your story and I will be thinking of you and sending you and your family a really long hug. Love, Wendy

  9. Katrina Arndt on June 17, 2020 at 3:00 pm

    Wendy,

Thank you for writing The Last Present. We liked the characters. Katrina liked how Amanda took part in the action and also narrated the story.

Ivy liked how the series changes who the main character is – she read all of the series through The Last Present and knows that the perspective changes from Amanda, to Rory, to Amanda, then Grace.

Ivy’s favorite character is Rory, because it’s a funny book and a lot of abstract things happen to Rory, like the devil bunny.

Thank you again, Katrina and Ivy

    • Wendy Mass on October 23, 2020 at 3:19 pm

Poor Rory, she was really a trooper LOL. I had a lot of fun with that one. Having the different narrators let me focus on different parts of the stories but it was fun for me to return to Amanda once she was a few years older. It was a little harder to write Grace because she was the youngest of all of them, but also maybe the wisest 😉 Thanks so much for sharing! All my best to you both. 🙂 Wendy

  10. Katrina Arndt on June 17, 2020 at 3:23 pm

Wendy, thank you for writing Every Soul a Star. We really hope you write a sequel. We have so many questions. We wonder: how does Allie do in school? How does Jack do in school after the summer at the camp? What happens to Bree, when she’s stuck on the campsite? Does her inner geek ruin her life?

We read your book this summer as part of summer reading. Your book was the first!

We look forward to hearing from you! Katrina and Maggie

    • Wendy Mass on October 23, 2020 at 3:16 pm

Hi guys! I’m honored that you read the book for summer reading and I love all your questions! I thought about making a sequel but wound up writing new books instead. I did, however, sneak those characters into another one of my books called The Candymakers and the Great Chocolate Chase. So if you read that book, you’ll get a few answers, I think. I hope that helps and that you guys remember to look up at the night sky sometimes. (But not while crossing a street LOL) xo, Wendy

    Dear Wendy,
I’m a former ESL teacher and more importantly Grandma to 19 grandchildren. During this virus, I needed a project so I created a bookclub for my 6 granddaughters. They live in CA, MD, and NJ.
We met on zoom every Sunday at 4:00. I absolutely loved your book, The Candymakers. We made homemade chocolates(those gals who lived near me). Your life lessons were a springboard for thought provoking discussions. One was did an adult every lie to you? Your character development and mysterious, cliff handing chapter endings only encouraged my readers to learn more. In looking back at this wonderful making memory experience, I got more out this bookclub! I grew closer to my granddaughters and gleaned more in depth understanding of their lives. Our youngest was 9 and the oldest 14. ‘Thank you, Wendy!

    • Wendy Mass on October 27, 2020 at 5:52 pm

Wow, I’m honored that you chose my book for such a creative and lovely family event. I’m glad it gave you guys a lot to talk about and hopefully everyone had some candy handy during it. I love that question and it makes me think if there’s anything I’ve lied to my own children about – all in their best interests of course LOL. I felt bad for Phillip in the book but I think his dad’s lie is a real turning point for him to do some growing up and to stand up to him. Thank you again for choosing the book and may I say, 19 grandchildren, wow! #blessed! All my best to you and the gang, Wendy

Hi there! I am literally your biggest fan and I was wondering if you plan to do anymore Willow Falls books? They are the best books I have ever read and I love reading about Amanda and Leo. I highly suggest you write more of them they are truly the best books ever! Thanks! -your BIGGEST FAN

    • Wendy Mass on October 23, 2020 at 3:12 pm

Wow thank you so much, I’m so glad you loved them; that means a lot to me. I loved writing those books and if I did write another one, it would be about their kids, but I’m still trying to think of a good-enough idea. Maybe one day there’ll be a film or TV show. But if there are any more books, I will let you know here! 🙂 Thanks again for reading them and for checking in. Big hugs, Wendy

  13. Erinn on July 13, 2020 at 12:33 pm

Hi Wendy! I’m a huge fan of all of your books, my favorite being the willow falls series. Rory reminded me a lot of myself and she and the rest of team grace really helped me through my middle school years, (i am a freshman now!) Your books have inspired me to write and read, basically my love of books. Someday I want to be an amazing author just like you. I know that the series has been over for a little now. but I’m really wondering; will you ever make a movie of the willow falls series? Jeremy Fink and the meaning of life was an amazing movie/book and I really would love to see the willow falls gang get turned into a movie! Thank you for all that you’ve helped me through by reading your books! Please never stop writing<3 ~ Erinn

    • Wendy Mass on October 23, 2020 at 3:02 pm

Wow, that was so lovely and moving. I’m honored that the books were able to be good companions for you, that means so much to me. Fingers crossed for a movie or TV show. I think a few different options have been considered and I will definitely post with any news. Big hugs to you and I hope you’re enjoying high school, as strange as it is in 2020. Hugs, Wendy

    Hi Wendy Mass!
I am a huge fan of your the willow falls series! I love how the elements of each story connect to the other books!
I was wondering if you could try to work together with movie producers to make movies of these stories. I would love to see how that would work out!
I have a few questions. Please answer them!
    Here they are!

    1) If the Willow Falls series were filmed, where would you want to film it?
    2) Who is your favorite character from the Willow Falls series?

I am really hoping you reply!
    Thank you so much!

    -Alexandra

    • Wendy Mass on October 23, 2020 at 2:42 pm

I’m so glad you enjoyed the series!

      1) I’d be thrilled if Willow Falls became a film or TV show, and it would be great if it was a made in a quaint little magical town 😉

      2) I’d guess I’d have to say Amanda because I know her the best. But poor Rory LOL. Thanks again for writing! xo, Wendy

  20. Matthew on January 7, 2021 at 7:54 am

    Dear Wendy Mass,

My name is Matthew and I am 7 years old. I really love your Time Jumpers books. I just finished reading them with my mom. We have read them two times now. I am wondering what happened to the other four items in the suitcase? Who is The Collector? Will you please write more Time Jumpers books? Thank you!

    Matthew

    • Wendy Mass on August 3, 2022 at 2:24 pm

Hi Matthew! I’m so glad you and your mom enjoyed the Time Jumpers books! I had fun imagining where they should go, and the trip to the future was especially fun to write. I’m honestly not sure what the other four objects are for, I was hoping to discover that myself in four more books (I knew they’d have something to do with the 4 elements of air/fire/earth/water), but as of now the series has ended at Book 4. Perhaps you’d like to write your own stories for what you think they would be, and who the Collector really is…that’d be great!
Sending my best wishes to you and your family,
      Wendy

  21. Joy S. on January 21, 2021 at 6:54 am

    Hello, Wendy!

I’m Joy. I wrote an email to you ’bout a year ago. Maybe you remember me? Anyhow, I’ve probably read The Willow Falls series more times than I can count, and you’ve inspired me so much! I want to be a writer, but there’s just one problem… I can’t finish a book, let alone get to the middle of it! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m tooooootally lost. Every time I write a chapter or two, I go back and read what I wrote and think, “This is terrible!” and I erase the whole thing. I’ve kept at this for about two years now 😑 I don’t know if this happens to every writer or I’m just weird. Please help!

    – Joy

    #firstcommentof2021

also, a new book is coming out??????? Count me in!

    • Wendy Mass on August 3, 2022 at 2:40 pm

      Hi Joy!
I hope the writing has been going well and that you’ve stopped throwing things out. Really try to keep it, you never know when you’ll suddenly think of a way to move the story along, or at the very least you can take the parts you like and move them to another story. If you haven’t already, take a look at the article on Outlining that I have on my website under Resources. It’s the technique I use and hopefully it will help you to organize your thoughts as well. I saw your other comment/question about the Candymakers sequel’s ending but didn’t post it b/c it had a bunch of spoilers, so I hope it’s ok if I answer it here–basically I made sure to tie up the major storylines in the end, but with so many characters and scenes, a little bit of mystery is still there, tucked away in the corners. Just like real life!
Sending you hugs and writing vibes!
      Wendy

  22. Regie on January 22, 2021 at 6:44 pm

Will you please write more twice upon a time books? I love them so much!

    • Wendy Mass on August 3, 2022 at 2:32 pm

Aw, thanks! I think Robin Hood was the last one in case you haven’t found that one yet, but I really loved doing those books too. I’ll let you know if any more are likely. Thanks!!

  23. Daniel M. Morris on February 2, 2021 at 6:59 pm

My family and I listened to the entire first Candymakers on our way home from Florida to Cleveland after winter break and were absolutely enthralled! Love the idea of the same story from different perspectives and how they all misunderstood each other at first. And a spy ring! What fun! Thanks and we are planning to listen to the second one on our next trip (if I can wait that long…). All the best.

    • Wendy Mass on August 3, 2022 at 2:31 pm

HI! I love that about listening on the long family road trip! The Candymaker kids (and me!) are honored to have come along! My family and I did that with the Harry Potter books and now it’s hard to get them to listen to audiobooks unless they’re narrated by Jim Dale lol. I hope you enjoyed BOOK 2 if you took that next road trip. The Prequel will be out in 2024, but it’s a graphic novel. Should still be on audio though. I’ll need to look into how that works in terms of what the listener would miss without being able to see the panels where the art picks up the story. Hmm.
Wishing you and your family all the best!
      Wendy

    Hi Wendy,
We love your books The Candymakers and The Great Chocolate Chase!
Are you thinking of or have you already started a third book with the same characters?
    We would love it!
Looking forward to your first graphic novel in 2022
    Abby, Dylan, Michelle

    • Wendy Mass on August 3, 2022 at 1:07 pm

      Hi Abby, Dylan and Michelle!
The first graphic novel–Lo and behold–is now spring 2023, so it’s getting closer! Life is Sweet will have many of the same characters as the other CM books, but when they were kids! (so you won’t meet Logan, but you’ll find out how he got his name. ;o).
      Hope that helps!
      Best wishes to all!
      Wendy

  26. Michelle on July 19, 2021 at 12:17 am

Hi Wendy! I know this isn’t relevant to the post but I wasn’t sure where else to comment!

I am currently 21 years old, but I read 11 Birthdays when I was around 10 and it remains my favorite book to this day. I don’t usually reread books but I have read this one several times and I know it like the back of my hand. That being said, I think it could be really interesting to see 11 Birthdays written from Leo’s perspective. Is this something that you would ever consider?

    • Wendy Mass on August 2, 2022 at 1:58 pm

Hi!! Thanks so much for reaching out (and wow on 10 times!). I really had fun writing that one (and the whole series). I have thought about doing it from Leo’s perspective but I feel like there probably isn’t enough differences from the storyline that is shown already to make it work. Maybe a prequel with a more distant character, or a sequel about the next generation…not sure!! You must be a writer to have had this idea. :o). All my best to you!!! Wendy

    • Wendy Mass on August 3, 2022 at 1:05 pm

Hi, some fast tips are to try to outline the story first and then write the parts that you’re most excited about. I tend to write straight through rather than jumping around now, but that helped me earlier on. Have fun! Thanks re: Willow Falls!! :o) Wendy

  30. Elise on January 28, 2022 at 5:16 pm

Hi Wendy! I just want to say that I love your books! The willow falls series is my favorite, but every single one of your books is amazing. You’ve inspired me to keep writing and keep reading. Visiting willow falls has helped me through covid and not seeing my friends, so thanks for that. Thanks so much for writing and inspiring kids like me.

Hi, I was wondering when you’re newest novel LO AND BEHOLD will come out. Also, what is a moon tree? Been wondering that since you’re latest post. Oh, and remember you’re first book, A Mango-shaped Space? (why did I ask that, yeah you remember!) Well, I was wondering if Mia still hates, I’m sorry, STRONGLY DISLIKES Adam still. I think you’re books are SOOOOOO good and you are on my list of favorite authors EVER!

    Keep writing,

Cant wait for a candymakers book 3 or prequel, And i would love to see something about Daisy and her spy school!

Hi, I’m Sara Rothenberg. I remember reading the book “Heaven Looks a Lot Like The Mall” when I was 11. I enjoyed it, but didn’t fully grasp its meaning until after I read it a few more times. After I did, it made me want to become a more mature person. That was surely a positive message. In fact, that scene where Nail Boy and Tessa speak to each other inside of that church made me want to truly become a Christian. I would be honored to play Eliza if they ever make a movie or miniseries based off of that story.

Hi Wendy! I’m Elise, I’m 13, and I just wanted to say that I love all of your books! Thank you so much for writing so many, I especially love The Candymakers and the Willow Falls series. They helped me so much going through covid as a 5th and 6th grader, and now as an 8th grader I STILL can’t stop reading them! As an aspiring writer, I definitely look up to you 🙂 I can’t wait for you to write another book, and I really hope that eventually we can get a movie or tv show adaptation. Once again, you are an amazing author and you seem like an amazing person in general as well. Hope you and your family are doing well!

    Dear Wendy Mass,
I haven’t read this book, but since you have not yet blogged about “A mango shaped space”, I decided to write this to you on your most recent post. My name is Sri Suktha and I live in Massachusetts. Your book “A Mango Shaped Space” is one of my favorites! It is a really nice feel-good book that is full of empathy. The description that you use in this book is absolutely fantastic. This book that you have written stirs a lot of emotions such as guilt, anger, happiness, confusion, etc. Overall, it is a light-hearted book. The overall experience is just utterly amazing. I especially love the ending of the book and how Mia’s cat Mango is almost ‘reborn’ as his kitten. As a reader, I love your books because of the descriptions. The way that you describe objects and different sensations in “A Mango Shaped Space” really helps me feel as if I can see everything that the character can. I also like many different genres, one of them being young-adult fiction. Another thing that appealed to me in this book is your character development. The change of Mia and how the people around her affected her was an adventure on its own. Thank you for writing this exemplary book and sharing a perspective of some people that many don’t know about.
    Sincerely,
    Sri Suktha
