A Lot is Happening in Willow Falls this month

September 15, 2013 by Wendy Mass 197 Comments

Happy back-to-school everyone! I love buying new school supplies, even when they’re not for me! Clean crisp notebooks full of possibility, sharpened #2 pencils, new lunch box with Shaun Cassidy on it…ok so they probably haven’t make those since the days i was in 6th grade but you get my drift. πŸ™‚

So the biggest news is that THE LAST PRESENT will be coming out on September 24th. That’s just around the corner. Hurrah! The action picks up right where 13 GIFTS left off so even though you could read any of the first three books out of order, I think you’ll be happier if you read 13 GIFTS before THE LAST PRESENT. And 13 GIFTS is out in paperback now to make that even easier. That’s the less-big but still exciting news πŸ™‚

last present cover final

A huge thanks to everyone who offered such wonderful ideas for the Candymakers script. I got to read the first draft and I LOVED it!! I know you will, too. The script is only the first step in a long process but fingers crossed. πŸ™‚

The last big news of the month (so far…hey, it’s only half over!) is that a beautiful script for A Mango-Shaped Space is making the rounds in Hollywood! It was written by the writer/director of the Jeremy Fink film and hopefully will be snatched up very soon! Fingers crossed again πŸ™‚

Happy reading everyone! I’m off to eat Starburst-flavored Candy Corn. Yum!!

I am SO excited for The Last Present, September 24th cannot come soon enough! I have my fingers crossed for the movie news, congratulations! Also, may I ask if you’ve given any thought to sequel to Every Soul a Star? I would love to find out how Ally adjusts to living in the big city and how Bree gets used to living at the Moon Shadow Campground! If you make any decisions, please mention it on the blog! After Space Taxi, will you write any more novels? πŸ™ but I understand you probably need some rest…as you said at the 2010 Collingswood book festival (which I saw on YouTube) “I have contracts for five more, and after that I wanna go to sleep and not write any more books because I think I’ve said all I need to say in my books.” I totally understand! But I still hope you write more novels!
    Thanks!

Oh my alpha centauri! That’s so exciting (referring to ALL of the news!)!!! I can’t wait to read The Last Present! Congratulations to you and the script writers for both the Candymakers and A Mango Shaped Space pre-movie! I’m sure they will be just as good as Jeremy Fink which was remarkably close to the book. I hope that soon someone will write a script for Every Soul a Star as well. Have a wonderful spring (sorry, fall for you)! Love from,

I haven’t seen the Jeremy Fink movie. Frankly, I don’t really want to. I guess that they just leave out all the good stuff and I am just tired of seeing movies with none of the good parts. And I want an Every Soul a Star movie! Or a sequel to it! I love that book!

I can’t wait to get the last present. As I am also sure a bunch of others can’t wait either. Out of all the books of yours I have read so far Jeremey Fink an the Meaning of Life has to be my favorite book. I always, no matter what, cry at the end. You really took the book to a new level and I really don’t want to see the movie because the book ALWAYS better. I hope you keep making touching books that relate to some of our lives and can make us feel happy again. πŸ™‚

And I am so happy about the Candymaker’s movie! When does it come out? I will try to find a copy. And I didn’t know anything about a Jeremy Fink movie and what was it that you said about a Mango Shaped Space movie?

P.S. My comments never seem to get posted (?) I wrote one the day this blog post came out, but it still says awaiting moderation. Even so, I hope this is posted as it is big news indeed!

YAY!!!! I can hardly hide my excitement right now (and I guess you can probably see that I am excited because I am ending my sentences with excessive exclamation marks and capitalization; they are VERY contagious). For days I have been wishing that there would at least, one time, there would be a book that I would be anticipating that was published before my birthday so that way I can purchase it on the day on my birthday, and here it is! The book that comes out exactly before my birthday, when I’m turning 13! And “The Last Present” starts right after “13 Presents”, the book that talks about Tara turning 13, and the book is coming out the day before my birthday! Coincidence? I don’t think so! After all, “there are no coincidences in Willow Falls!” It’s also exciting to hear the fact that “A Mango Shaped Space” and “The Candymakers” are in the process of being made into movies! Well, I am looking forward to the 24th! Can’t wait to read the book! πŸ™‚ Stay strong and wonderful as well! From, the girl who is told by her friends that she is like the morning time. πŸ™‚

I have decided to re-read the entire Willow Falls series before then, so I can be sure I haven’t forgotten anything. I would love to see A Mango Shaped Space (My favorite book of all time) be turned into a movie. Think you can get some of us aspiring actresses an audition for that? (Mia possibly? Thanks for commenting on my other comment, I was so happy when I saw!:) but, one other question I want to ask (and this is really random) is what the book spine (is that what you call it?) on The Last Present is? Like, 11 Birthdays had skinny colourful stripes, Finally had polka dots and 13 Gifts had thick green stripes……. It’s just, when I look at the books on my book shelf, I see the spines, and yeah….. That’s something I love about the series……. And that sounded pretty weird… πŸ˜‰

I’ve read 9 of your books (all standing proudly on my bookshelf) and I can’t help but ask if you’ve made any decisions pertaining to a sequel or companion novel to Every Soul a Star. Back in a 2009 post, you actually said what they would be called but I haven’t heard about it recently. Are you still considering it? I am a really really hopeful person lol πŸ™‚ I think it would be so amazing to read about Ally’s first day of school in the city and how Bree adjusts to the camp and how Jack has changed.

    Hi,
I finished The Last Present in record time, only took me a few hours! Something interesting I noticed, this may or may not have been intentional, 11 Birthdays (Book 1) had a LOT of magic in it. FInally and 13 Gifts were definitely magical, but not nearly as much. In Last Present, the magic came back really strong. DId you mean to, (forgive the pun) bookend you series with lots of magic?
Also, I LOVED the LP, great way to end the series. Thanks!

All of the things that were revealed, especially basically everything at the end, blew my mind so much and IT ALL MADE SENSE!!!! And all of the couples and their cute little moments were PERFECTION!!! The last sentence made me throw my book across my bed and cry because it was so perfect and made me so happy and excited and a lot of other feelings!! I loved every bit of this entire series! These books have impacted my life so much, from the way I look at things down to the way I even write my own stories. They’re so wonderful, and I’m definitely sad to see the series end. I love a lot of books, but this series is definitely my favorite by far! It’ll always hold a very special place in my heart!! <3 :'D

So yeah I know I’ve posted a lot of comments, and it’s probably annoying (I apologize, I really do) but I also just want to put a quick note to Mrs. Mass because I’m a huge reader and I want to be a writer someday. So here goes: Ever since my friend in sixth grade recommended Every Soul a Star to me, I kept picking up more of your books and haven’t stopped loving them. I can only imagine how hard it must be to write them, so I feel pretty bad asking for a sequel/companion to Every Soul a Star, but Chicago would definitely be a change for Ally and I’m curious to see how, if ever, it will turn out. Of course there’s the problem of convincing the PTB (from what you said, Mrs. Mass! πŸ™‚ and meeting people’s expectations, but either way I can’t wait for all of your next published adventures, like Space Taxi!!!! And hopefully one or two more novels after that? Anyway, I love books, I honestly do, I treasure my favorites so much that I refuse to crease them or let anyone else lay hands on them! πŸ™‚ They will be on my bookshelf forever, never will go to Goodwill or be thrown away–never! πŸ™‚

Thank you SO much, Mrs. Mass for your books and their impact on my life! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

I am reading the Candy Makers, and got to say loving it! I am at part three and I have been thinking about Daisy as a character. I just had to put out there as another book idea is a whole series based off of Daisy as a spy. I know I would read it, and maybe according to the comments it’s not the most popular book of yours but I love it and I think others will too. Also, just wanted to let you know how much I love your writing. A couple other of my favorites are James Patterson, Trenton Lee Stewart, and Erin Hunter. I love your works because I love reading books with a full description and that set an image in your mind. Or as I see it television with no commercials because I read more than I watch television. Dear Wendy,
You are amazing. I think you are so talented in your writing. You are wonderful in every one of your books. I feel like I am right there with Ally, Jack, Bree, Amanda, Leo, Rory, Tara, and all of the other characters. I actually found myself stressing that the problem in the stories might not be solved. πŸ™‚ Only a talented writer could make the reader feel like that. πŸ™‚ I am almost done with The Last Present and so far it is AWESOME. The day after it came out we were on our way to a wedding in the mountains and I begged my parents to take me to a book store to get it and they knew how much I wanted it so they took me. My mom says that you have made me a better writer because now, after reading all of your books, I have a certain style of writing, just like you have one. I hope I sometime get to meet you. I tell all my friends about your books and so far they have read Every Soul A Star and 11 birthdays and completely loved it. In language arts the other week we read the Ray Bradbury book All Summer in a Day that you referred to in Every Soul A Star. We all looked at each other grinning because we knew we had heard it in your book. I live in Raleigh,North Carolina. If you ever do any visits down here post it . (For you, I mean the neighboring states too.) My little brother gets his treatments at Duke Children’s Hospital and I know I can always count on your book to cheer me up after a long, hard day there. He and I were in their magazine so maybe you saw us.
    Thank you for being wonderful!

    OH MY GOODNESS
    I GOT THE LAST PRESENT
It was such a a beautiful, tear jerking book, I couldn’t put it down.

Everything makes sense. Grace and Angelina… who would have thought? These books have made me think so much, about repaying my debts to society. If I could help everyone out the way Angelina has and Grace will then I would.

You have no idea how much I just want to move into Willow Falls and meet all the wonderful characters in your book. This series holds a special place in my heart that I will never forget. Dear Wendy, your books have made me cry to no end (in a good way!) and though I do wish you could write more and more Willow Falls books, I know The Last Present was the last one. Maybe a sequel series? *wink wink*

Wouldn’t it be fun, 50 years later, with a whole new population and a now old Grace who’s just like Angelina helping out a whole new generation of kids? πŸ™‚ Just an idea, but I honestly can’t wait to read more of your work, Wendy Mass. Each book never fails to make me cry and think.

Best of luck to Grace, Angelina&Bucky, and all the newfound relationships.

I have not read the last present yet because i have not gotten my hands on a copy. but i know it will be AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just hate it when a book series ends! I read the other three out of order- 13Gifts, !!birthdays, then finally, but they were still all so good! Whenever i finish a good book i slowly close the book and then just sit there, smiling and thinking about how it was summed up and all the little details in between. I did the exact same thing for all three of your books. After i finished 13 gifts(the first one i read) i felt so warm inside as i sat there. The very next day i took the book to school and requested it to all my friends. I literally had a list of people so i knew what order to let people read it. Everyone loved it but, unfortunately, my book got very beat up:) Only reason i don’t want to read the last present is i don’t want the series to end! You have inspired me so much Wendy! I want to be an author and i am working on 3 novels right now. i only wish they will turn out like your books did!!!!!

I have read 11 Birthdays, 12 Finally, and 13 Gifts. I am getting The Last Present at the book fair and am so exited to read it! My favorite book is 12 Finally because of all the accidents. I thought it was really gross when a lot of puss came out of Rory’s ear.Are any of the accidents based on someone’s life? How did you think of them? What book are you writing right now? What is it about? I am in 4th grade. My Christmas list is full of your books. You know how the book you just wrote is called The Last Present well maybe you could write another book in that series but when she is 15 she wouldn’t get any presents. Were any of the characters based on you or anyone else? I really like reading your books and can not wait to read your response!

I am reading the last present and am loving every minute of it. Okay I need to get this out: OH MY GOSH I LOVE YOUR WORK YOU ARE THE BEST AUTHOR EVER I REALLY WANT TO MEET YOU IF I COULD MEET ANY FAMOUS PERSON IT WOULD TOTALLY BE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry about that l just really wanted to say that. I love your willow falls series. My favorite book however is a mango shaped space. I think you should write a sequel. Also about the actor thing… I have always wanted to be in a movie. Maybe you could hook me up?S ome may call me crazy but it’s the truth I really want to be an actress. I don’t know what I would do if I never read your books. You are truly amazing!

I also think you should write a book for every age up to 19 because I just found out that the binding spell only lasts 18 years and it willI be interesting to see how they still don’t get sick.I am so exited to read more of The Last Present!

Hi! Anyway, I just want to say you are one of my favorite authors. The first book i ever read that you wrote was A Mango Shaped Space, and from there on, i fell in love with your books. Is this the last of the Willow Fall’s books? If so, then you’ve made an excellent dream world. Amanda and Leo’s stories are my favorite, and writing another book from Amanda’s POV was a great idea. Every single character you come up with is another part of my family. You’ve changed the world for people like me who can’t fit in. Keep on writing!

I’m such a HUGE fan of your Willow Falls series!! The Last Present and the Candymakers is now at the book fair at my school and I’m getting both of them! Me and my friend are SUCH big fans and we are SO happy you made another Willow Falls book! I just want to let you know your books inspire me to do ANYTHING and I greatly appreciate that! I am so sad to see the series end, but I know The Candymakers will be just as good! Maybe in the future you could make a movie out of the Willow Falls series?? I would LOVE to see it! Your books give me such a warm feeling inside and i just want to say THANK YOU for everything! I hope in the future there will be a new edition to this series, so I can be happy all over again πŸ™‚
I forget what I put in the last post, because it was still under moderation! I was SO MAD because it was pretty long and had some important stuff in there πŸ™‚ Well, to sum ALL this up, just, just, just… THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!

I finally read The Last Present, and I must say, it is phenomenal. I first read Eleven Birthdays when I was ten, and since then, I have read the Willow Falls Series countless times. I’m fifteen now, but I can still say that your books are my favorite. I have been able to relate with Rory’s shyness at her first boy-girl party, Emily’s brainy-ness (is that even a word?), and Amanda’s worries of change as she and Leo develop a closer relationship. When I finished The Last Present, I had to go back through and reread all my favorite parts. I felt like by the end of the series, all of your characters were my best friends. (Not to mention that I had developed a serious crush on Leo) You portray these thirteen year old characters perfectly, and make them seem their age, because they aren’t expressing these serious, deep feelings that others books might show thirteen year olds to have. The relationship between Leo and Amanda makes me want to have something like that in my life. I know that the Willow Falls Series will be the books I always come back to, whether it’s a year or ten years from now, and I thank you for giving me Leo, Amanda, Rory, Tara, and Angelina, who started it all.

ok, this made me cry a little (in a good way) I’m so honored that you’ve taken up residence in Willow Falls! It’s been a lot of fun for me to revisit these characters again, especially to write from Amanda’s POV when she’s over two years older. And good ol Leo. Who wouldn’t love a boy who writes poetry? ;o)
Thank you for sticking with the series for so many years. All my best wishes!!

It was literally perfect and it made me so, so SO happy reading it! I really, really hope that you will write a spin-off series because I literally would cry tears of joy!! Speaking of which I actually cried in The Last Present because the friendships in the book were so amazing and like perfect and I wish I had Amanda, Rory, Leo and Tara as friends and also because I was so sad it was the last one and because the book itself was so good and God it was amazing! Sorry I’m just ranting but it honestly was and I recommended it to all my friends and they loved it and the series too! I’m trying to become an author like you as well and one day hope I can become half as good as you! Stay amazing! πŸ˜€ xx

Hi. I just wanted to say that I read your book 13 gifts a year or two ago (after reading your first two books) I absolutely loved it and wanted to read the next book. I looked for it but was very dissappointed when I couldn’t find it. I gave up and forgot about it,13 gifts was left, abandoned, on my shelf for a couple years. Until today I had a sudden urge to read it. So when I finsihed it of course I went online to try to find the next book. I was surprised to find out it came out on my thirteenth birthday. I thought it was a very cool coincidence and wish I would have known about it earlier. But of course, being Wendy Mass, you’re probably thinking “there are no coincidences in Willow Falls” πŸ™‚ Now I’m very excited to get “The Last Present” and read, but I’m also a little scared, finsihing it will be like saying goodbye to a good friend. Thanks in advance for a great read!

DO NOT QUIT THE WILLOW FALLS SERIES. i love your books so much. they are funny, well written (EXTREMLY well written) and totally AWESOME!!!!

I wouldn’t know what to do with out them, my other favorite writer Rick Rioradan is writing his last Percy Jackson book there really awesome just as good as your books its coming out September and I cant wait, but I don’t know which is sadder you stopping the willow falls series or him stopping Percy Jackson it makes me want to cry.

I have no idea why I freaked out so much when I read them.i love how you reuse the same characters.i usually don’t like it when people reuse characters but the way you write your books make me love it. So far I’ve only read 11birthdays, finally, 13 gifts, mango shaped space, and the candy makers. My favorite is 13gifts and the candy makers. I felt so sad when I finished the candy makers. When I finished 13gift I felt sad too, but then I looked at the back of the book and saw the last present. I Am so in love with you books that I couldn’t stop reading them. I kept reading them until I realized that it was around 11 at night. I finished the books in around two days even though my teacher said to read it in five days, but I obviously didn’t listen to her. I can’t wait to read the last present. I’m going to ask my mom if she can take me to the book store so I can buy it. – so happy- write back soon. <3 an awesome fan a.k.a Cynthia herna

Wendy Mass, You have done it again! The Last Present was everything I was looking for. I really enjoyed that the characters have acted their age. They are not all serious about romantic relationships at 11 years old. I also enjoyed the characters. They were always simply their selves ( Not to mention I had a huge crush on Leo and David). At the end, I felt like the characters were looking over my shoulder, reading with me. I had felt my best friend was Amanda. I wish there were more books in the Willow Falls series. I will always remember the warm felling it gave me. This book will not be one I ever forget.

Please, please, please, please, please, please write another book in the series. I am sooooooooooo sad that the series ended. I’ve liked the book so much that I feel like I would want Amanda, Leo, Rory, Tara, and David to be my friends. I want to go on adventures like those with them. I started reading 11 Birthdays in fifth grade ( I’m now in sixth grade ) when my reading teacher let us choose the books we wanted to read. The choices were 11 Birthdays, A Mango Shaped Space, and The Candy Makers. I chose 11 Birthdays. Anyway… Long story short, I read it and I LOVED it. I learned that there was a series and started reading it then stopped. I started reading them again last week and finished them in less than a week. Again I would really, really, really, like it if you wrote another one. Please…….

This is my favorite book series, esp. on audio and I don’t like reading or books that much. I just read Graceful, are you going to write more of the series or is Graceful the last one? I hope that its not!

Graceful is the final book–for now. I love to hear you enjoyed the books on audible. Not many write me regarding that format. I LOVE audio books too. Happy listening! xo
